Under the direction of the Emergency Manager of the City of Fort Myers, the purpose of the internship is for students majoring in Emergency Management, Public Safety, or related field to receive on-the-job exposure and experience to explore career options, apply academic knowledge and skills to the workplace, gain career skills, build resumes, network with emergency management professionals. This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
While working, interns will:
- Complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) training and additional FEMA training.
- Attend meetings with stakeholders within the community.
- Prepare for and/or participate in exercises (tabletop, functional, or full-scale).
- Learn about the role of municipal government as it relates to county, state and federal partners.
- Assist with the coordination of outreach programs.
- Complete real-world projects
Students assigned to this Emergency Management Intern classification may perform both routine duties and non-routine support duties as the nature of the area of work and studies assigned. Emphasis is placed on providing varied, meaningful learning experiences to the student, while at the same time providing work assistance to the City.
Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation:
Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.
Non-Essential Employees will not be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee’s Department Head will determine when the employee will be required to work.
- Provide analytical, technical, and administrative assistance on emergency management assignments. Assignments may involve exercise design and development, preparing incident action plans for events, editing emergency management documents and conducting public information and outreach.
- Assist staff with day-to-day operations.

- Performs basic administrative duties including written reports, memorandums, letters and electronic correspondence, interaction with the public and communication through telephone and meetings.

- This position requires regular and reliable attendance and the employee’s physical presence at the workplace.

- This position is best suited for undergraduates, graduate students, or recent graduates with a background in emergency management, homeland security, public safety, public administration, intelligence studies, international/national security, disaster planning, political science, or related fields.
- Candidates should possess a GPA of 2.5 or higher to be considered.

- Previous office experience is preferred but not required.
