Summary
The Recreation Supervisor is an essential part of Recreation and is responsible for overseeing recreational sports, field rentals, various programs, and various outdoor special events. The Recreation Supervisor position is responsible for direct oversight of two full time Sports/Program Coordinators, and approximately 10-20 part-time and seasonal employees. This includes recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating staff, program design and implementation, and program and staff development.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Include The Following
- Serves as the point person for planning, organizing, developing, scheduling, and evaluating recreation athletics and programs.
- Assists with hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, and evaluating athletic programs.
- Coordinate volunteers from the community; recruit, train and supervise volunteer coaches and staff.
- Coordinate with private sports clubs and reseve field space for games and tournaments.
- Oversee monthly trainings for staff on topics such as customer service, risk management, emergency response, conflict resolution, and recreation management software.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment; distribute supplies and equipment; assist with ordering supplies and equipment for recreation athletic and fitness programs.
- Oversee public relations, such as preparing content for distributing flyers, newsletters, press releases, social media posts, and brochures.
- Oversee and administer individual program or facility budgets as appropriate, monitor expenditures and payroll in accordance with established procedures. Provide clerical support, program registration, answer telephones and maintain correspondence with other divisions or agencies; may respond to public inquiries about the facility.
- Ability to officiate youth and/or adult sports if needed and appropriate.
- Oversee the development of classes, schedules and implementation of activities, programs, and coordinates with the recreation programs for facility usage.
- Coordinate and supervise staff on weeknights, weekends, and holidays.
- Assist with opening and closing the operations of the recreation center and the school district facility when appropriate. Assist in emergency custodial maintenance work. Set up tables, sports equipment, chairs and bleachers for classes and programs.
- Responsible for preparation and administration of the sports/programs budget and related funds, and the development of reports and performance in support of Department financial goals.
- Oversee and work with Special Event Specialist for any outdoor special events.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience may be considered for the position. A typical way to demonstrate the education and experience necessary for the position is:
- Bachelor’s degree in recreation management or closely related field is required;
- 3-5 years of full-time and part-time staff supervisory and operations experience is required;
- Experience with recreation software is preferred.
- Considerable knowledge of developing and administering recreation and youth government programs; working knowledge of the rules of a variety of sports;
- Ability to work under stressful situations; ability to stay calm; have excellent problem-solving skills;
- Ability to work evenings, night shifts, split shifts, weekends and some holidays;
- -Ability to participate in active sports and recreation activities;
- Ability to organize and direct recreation programs;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, public, news media and other departments and agencies;
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions;
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing;
- Ability to direct the work of others;
- Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with participants and create a welcoming and inclusive environment;
- Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluatefull time and part-time staff;
- Oversee monthly staff meetings and provide professional development and training for staff and voluteers;
- Administer surveys and focus groups to gauge participant satisfaction levels, constructive feedback, and gain ideas for new programs and special events;
- Work directly with Marketing staff to ensure marketing materials, website, and social media sites are updated with accurate information;
- Develop collaborative programs with outside service agencies;
- Ability to work with Facilities and parks staff to ensure building and field setups are completed in a timely manner.Current certification in Community CPR, First Aid and AED or within 3 months of hire;
Computer Skills
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of general office software including word processing and spreadsheets as well as experience with specialized recreational management software.
Certificates And Licenses
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License.
- Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification or acquire after 3 months of hire.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises two full-time Recreation Coordinator employees and indirectly supervises part-time, seasonal staff and volunteers in the Recreation department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Work is generally performed in an office environment but while performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee may regularly travel to and from buildings to complete job responsibilities and tasks assigned.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but may be loud at times with frequent interruptions and frequent contact with members of the public.
