We are seeking an entry level Assistant County Attorney for our civil office. This position will perform professional legal work for the County Attorney, including representation of the County in hearings and trials, and advising the Board of County Commissioners, elected officials, and directors. Primarily, this position will litigate zoning, code enforcement, and land use matters on behalf of the County. Assignments are subject to change and attorneys may perform any of the work of the County Attorney’s office.

- Litigate zoning, code enforcement, and land use matters and provide legal support to the Department of Community Safety and Wellbeing.
- Advise the Board of County's Commissioners, elected officials, and directors on legal issues.
- Research legal questions and prepare opinions, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents.
- Monitor legal developments, including proposed legislation and court decisions.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to communicate effectively and calmly in situations of conflict, whether with opposing counsel, employees, elected officials, or co-worker.
- Ability to perform statutory interpretation and legal research analysis and writing.
- Desire and ability to try cases and competently and professionally present arguments/evidence in court.
- Working knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
- Ability to interpret and apply legal principles.
- Ability to "think on one's feet" and easily adapt to arguments/issues presented in court.
- Ability to use initiative and independent judgment and work effectively without close supervision.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Proficiency in current computer software programs used for daily job functions, including knowledge of Lexis-Nexis and/or Westlaw legal software.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Exercises no direct supervision, but may supervise support staff assisting with projects.
Requirements
Qualifications for Success
- Experience: 0-5 years of experience as an attorney.
- At this time, the County Attorney’s Office will not accept applications from attorneys practicing more than 5 years.
- Education and Training: Must possess a law degree from an accredited law school.
- License or Certificate: Must be licensed to practice law with the State of Colorado at the time of application; must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
- Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check.
