Summary
Performs general civil engineering field and office work.
Essential Functions
Perform engineering design for municipal public works (either streets/drainage engineering, or water utilities engineering);
Estimate construction costs for projects;
Inspect and test materials used in construction; inspect construction in progress and upon completion;
Write construction specifications and assemble plans;
Provide information to the public related to public works facilities;
Assist developers, landowners, and real estate agencies on engineering issues related to subdivisions or property;
Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
Based on qualifications applicant may be eligible for a Civil Engineering Associate I, Civil Engineering Associate II, Civil Engineer I, Civil Engineer II, or Civil Engineer III.
Civil Engineering Associate I
Completion of a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field or any combination of relevant education and experience that provides the ability to perform the primary duties listed below;
Primary duties include:
Perform quantity take-offs for small projects;
Ability to prepare letters, memos, and draft reports with minimal corrections;
Performs related work as assigned.
Civil Engineering Associate II
Completion of a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field with 2-4 years of applicable civil engineering experience or any combination of relevant education and experience that provides the ability to perform the primary duties listed below;
Primary duties include:
Basic knowledge of plan preparation for small projects;
General understanding of the City of Lubbock Standard Specifications and general engineering principles;
Performs related work as assigned.
Required: Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam
Civil Engineer I
Completion of a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field with 4 years of applicable civil engineering experience or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the ability to perform the primary duties listed below;
Primary duties include:
Design smaller projects (under $1 million) and understand the process through bidding;
Manage small projects prepared by consultants;
Prepare technical reports and memos with oversight;
Resolve minor construction issues and development issues;
Performs related work as assigned.
Required: Licensed Professional Engineer
Civil Engineer II
Completion of a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field with 5 years of applicable civil engineering experience or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the ability to perform the primary duties listed below;
Primary duties include:
Has advanced skills in resolving construction and development issues that go beyond “citystandards” based on engineering knowledge and experience;
Completes all projects assigned in a satisfactory manner;
Manage medium-sized (less than $5 million) projects prepared by consultants;
Prepare technical reports and memos with minimal oversight;
Performs related work as assigned.
Civil Engineer III
Completion of a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field with 6 years of applicable civil engineering experience or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the ability to perform the primary duties listed below;
Primary duties include:
Manage large-sized (greater than $5 million) projects prepared by consultants;
Prepare technical reports and memos with no oversight;
Review and approve more complex projects by others;
Develop advanced technical expertise in one or more areas;
Begin developing leadership skills beyond managing a project;
Able to make presentations to co-workers and senior engineering staff;
Performs related work as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of Civil Engineering related to water, sewer, street, and drain design and construction.
Ability to:
Plan, organized, and directed engineering projects;
Perform professional engineering duties;
Maintain effective working relationships with others by working with teams;
Communicate effectively orally and in writing; Supervise the work of others.
Physical Requirements:
Frequently stand and walk during the shift;
Occasionally climb stairs, ladders, and inclined surfaces; Frequently bend during the shift;
Frequently kneel during the shift;
Frequently lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds;
Frequently push and pull objects;
Frequently flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially at the knees;
Frequently rotate upper trunk to the right or left while sitting or standing;
Place arms above, at, and below shoulder height;
Coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle.
