Under general supervision, supervises, plans coordinates and oversees assigned Fire Department operations, services and activities including fire suppression, fire prevention inspections, in service training activities and maintenance of equipment and facilities; coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, outside agencies and general public; presents public education programs; provides staff assistance to the Fire Deputy Chief or designee and performs related work as required.

Exercises direct supervision as chief field officer for the Suppression Division on an assigned shift.

Direct and supervise all firefighting forces within the City; respond to structural fire alarms and major emergencies; ascertain the need and type of additional equipment necessary to counteract the emergency; make technical decisions as to the best methods of extinguishing.
Serves as incident commander during emergency operations; direct and coordinate emergency resources; implements the incident command system. Oversees day-to-day operations of a fire shift; responds to emergencies and critical incidents to direct and manage resources and activities.
Schedule, supervise, train, and evaluate personnel assigned to a shift.
Develop recommendations and participate in the budget development and administration process. monitors and approves expenditures and implements budgetary adjustments within their limits of their monetary authorization.
Develop and implement shift personnel and work schedules including prevention, training, maintenance, and public relations activities; prepare performance evaluations and salary adjustment recommendations relative to company commanders and review same for all shift personnel.
Work with other management staff to maintain, revise, or improve the overall operations of the department.
Prepare administrative forms, special research reports and develop programs assigned; assist with staff recommendations, and other administrative duties.
Respond to alarms with a shift and/or company as required by departmental policy and assume command of operations unless relieved of command by a superior officer.
Manages the resources of assigned programs and activities to ensure emergency response readiness and acceptable levels of maintenance and supplies.
Directs, coordinates and reviews work plans for assigned fire companies; meets with staff to resolve problems, assigns activities, and review and evaluate services, methods, and procedures.
Participates in the selection, training, motivation, and evaluation of assigned staff and recommends and/or implements disciplinary action; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to enhance their strengths and correct deficiencies.

Experience And Education
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities.
Experience
A typical combination is:
Five years of progressively responsible public sector work experience in the fire suppression and prevention area, including supervisory and administrative responsibility.
At least three years of this service must be performed as a full-time Fire Captain with a public sector agency.
Education
Equivalent of an associate of arts degree (60 semester units) with major work in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration, or a related field is desirable (bachelor's degree preferred); preferably including or supplemented by specialized course work in fire suppression, prevention, training, supervision, or a closely related area.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid Driver's License issued from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Possession of current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or (EMT-P) Paramedic certification.
Possession of a current CPR certificate from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
Possession of Chief Officer 3A, 3B, 3C, and 3D, certificate or a bachelor's degree in a related field.
California State Fire Marshal Fire Officer Certificate.
Certification of completion of NWCG or California State Fire Marshal AH330, S-270, S-290, CA-219. Strike Team Leader Trainee is required prior to the completion of one year of employment in this classification. Exceptions will be based on course availability and at the discretion of the Fire Chief.

Application Review: Initially, each candidate’s application package including required attachments will be reviewed and appraised. Application package review is for qualifying purposes only. There is no weight assigned to this review. The testing portion of the selection process will consist of three phases.
All phases must be passed independently of each other to have the candidate’s name assigned to the eligibility list.
Testing for all phases is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Times will be assigned for each candidate.
- SIMULATION - 3 Major Incident Simulators (weighted 60% of the overall score - candidates must pass each simulation with a score of 70% to continue in the process).

- PERSONNEL PROBLEMS-(weighted 20% of the overall score - candidates must pass this phase with a score of 70% to continue in the process).
Candidates successfully completing both phases of the selection process shall have their names placed on the Employment Eligibility List for Fire Battalion Chief. Eligibility Lists are generally valid for a one-year period. Appointment(s) to the position will be made from the Eligibility List and candidates invited to meet with the Brea Fire Department Command Staff will be contacted directly from the Fire Department.
