The incumbent in this position supports the work of the Office of Sustainability by performing research on policies and programs and assisting in the implementation of projects. Individuals in this position should have interest and/or experience in a range of environmental topics including, but not limited to, community sustainability, climate change, energy conservation, solid waste and recycling/composting, water conservation, green building, sustainable transportation and environmental stewardship.
The City adopted its first Climate Action Plan in 2021 and anticipates adoption of the updated Plan in June or July 2026. The City is actively implementing several programs and projects to support climate action. This position will provide input and support for each of these initiatives.
The expected start date of the position is May 18th and will end on August 31st.

- Coordinate and implement a professional development event and outreach plan for the City’s first solar and battery storage project. Support development of a workshop, training or other event that advances professional development for youth and adults interested int he solar sector. Includes coordination with consultants, contractors, youth organizations and possibly staff and students from Issaquah High School, Issaquah Middle School and Gibson Ek High School. The event will be held in late fall, but all possible work to develop the event should be completed by end of summer.
- Coordinate and implement outreach and education materials and campaigns to promote electric bike safety and a rebate program. Develop short videos or other marketing assets to promote ebike safety and the rebate program. In partnership with a local bike retailer, host a “ride and apply” event that teaches e-bike basics, safety, and provides 1-1 support for applying for a City or state ebike rebate. Host a booth at up to 4 events to promote the rebate, including the Farmers Market and Concerts on the Green.
- Ongoing project management and promotion. Support the GeoTour “Issaquest” maintenance and promotion. The City launched Issaquah, a geo tour adventure, in 2025. This city-wide scavenger hunt tells the story of environmental and climate stewardship throughout the city. The city will continue the adventure through spring2027. Develop up to 4 assets to further promote the program, develop a new limited-edition award, and support weekly maintenance – as needed- at the ten city-hosted caches.
- Research and analysis for the Issaquah Climate Action Plan. The City will adopt an updated Climate Action Plan in June or July 2026. This position may support research on City codes and policies to identify opportunities for reducing barriers for energy efficiency, renewable energy or to incentivize denser development. Other ICAP implementation research may occur.
- Must have a passion for sustainability and educational coursework or experience in one or more sustainability topics.
- High School Diploma or GED with minimum1 year experience in?natural resources, environmental studies, planning and urban studies, sustainable business, public administration, or a related field.?
- Preferred qualification:?currently enrolled or recent graduate of a college undergraduate or post-baccalaureate degree program in natural resources, environmental studies, planning and urban studies, sustainable business, public administration, or a related field.
- Excellent communication and public presentation skills. Experience working in both one-on-one and group settings.
- Ability to work with diverse populations in a positive, professional and courteous manner.
- Ability to work independently and remotely as well as support a collaborative team environment with common goals.
- Knowledge of common office equipment and computer software applications. Ability to lift 30 pounds and work in outdoor environment involving tables, tents, chairs and stairs.
- Outstanding organizational skills, including ability to outline and schedule tasks, set deadlines, anticipate issues and needs, work in a timely fashion, communicate regularly and track progress.
- Direct knowledge or experience with community based social marketing strategies or projects preferred.
- Prior experience researching and writing reports and making recommendations on environmental or sustainability topics.
