Summary
Leads and participates in the work of employees engaged in the maintenance of irrigation systems.
Essential Functions
- Lead and participate in the work of employees engaged in maintenance of irrigation systems;
- Assist in supervising the maintenance and renovations of all irrigation systems in the parks and recreation system;
- Install and maintain the controlled irrigation control system;
- Assist in developing and implementing preventive maintenance and operation schedules on equipment and irrigation system components;
- Maintain compliance with training and reporting requirements related to loss control, safety, environmental compliance and hazardous materials;
- Assist with supervision of irrigation systems. Monitor and assist with excavation and repair of irrigation and electical lines, electric valves,
- sprinkler heads and drip lines. Assist in controlling and monitoring water usage. Assist in completing reports on gallons of water used;
- Prepare written reports and/or give oral presentations regarding maintenance and irrigation activities;
- Respond to citizen complaints or inquiries regarding conditions and/or activities in parks;
- Interview with media, legal and management regarding park conditions;
- Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
Completion of high school diploma or the equivalent with an additional three years experience in maintenance of irrigation systems, or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:
TCEQ Certified Back-flow Tester
Texas Licensed Irrigator
Physical Exam Required
Valid Texas Driver’s License required; a current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred
Must be able to obtain Irrigators License and TCEQ Certified Back-flow license within a year of being hired.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Use of computer programs;
- Turf maintenance and renovation practices;
- Basic carpentry and painting;
- Plumbing related to irrigation piping repairs, water supply piping, and control valves for irrigation, drinking fountains, or restrooms;
- Electrical repair related to irrigation pump, controller, valve repairs or installation;
- Installation, testing and repair of back-flow prevention devices;
- Irrigation design methods;
- Landscape irrigation auditing techniques to maintain healthy green plants;
- Set up and conduct training programs and safety meetings;
- Follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- Supervise the work of others;
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, labor hours, and expenditures;
- Prepare reports and a variety of other documents;
- Operate a variety of equipment used in the park irrigation maintenance;
- Troubleshoot and repair a variety of equipment used in irrigation;
- Operate computer and standard office equipment;
- Adapt to changes in work priorities and schedules;
- Work under a time line;
- Set up and conduct training programs and safety meetings;
- Follow oral and written instructions.
Physical Requirements:
- Occasionally stand and walk during the shift;
- Occasionally sit, bend, and kneel during the shift;
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 75 pounds;
- Frequently push and pull objects;
- Occasionally flex upper trunk at the waist and partially flex at the knees;
- Occasionally rotate upper trunk to the right or left while sitting or standing;
- Place arms above, at, or below shoulder height;
- Coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle or equipment.
