The classification will direct, plan, and coordinate the vehicle and equipment maintenance programs for the Town of Smyrna. Duties and responsibilities include: directing and managing assigned personnel; prioritizing and scheduling vehicle maintenance; forecasting and advising on the purchase of new equipment and vehicles; monitors departmental fuel usage; directs emissions program for vehicles used by the Town of Smyrna; assists in the development and administration of departmental budget; advises on any environmental issues related to alternative fuel and vehicles as directed. Reports to Director of Public Works.

- Manages personnel for the Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance Department.
- Performs managerial duties in accordance with the Town's policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, planning, assigning and directing work, completing performance appraisals and evaluations, performance counseling, corrective action, and problem resolution. Ensures employees are sent to appropriate schools and certification programs for training.
- Plans, prioritizes, schedules, coordinates, and monitors regular projects involving vehicle maintenance, renovation, remodeling, or upgrades in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations; supervises and monitors all project activities; develops project timetables; determines necessary resources and equipment for each project, and coordinates purchase of equipment and maintenance items.
- Evaluates vehicles and equipment based on age, use, maintenance history, and cost. Forecasts and plans for the replacement of fleet vehicles and equipment. Works with all departments to determine the need for specific equipment and vehicles and makes budget recommendations.
- Manages and maintains electronic records of all preventative maintenance programs on assigned Fleet Vehicles and equipment.
- Ensures all employees adhere to all internal and external OSHA regulations and Town safety policies. Assists in the performance of inspections and maintenance of records/documents pertaining to such inspections. Conduct regular safety meetings.
- Assists in the formulation and development of budgets for all projects; monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgets; reviews invoices and payment requests, and approves as appropriate.
- Responds to and follows up on work orders, citizen and departmental requests for service, and inquiries in a timely manner.
- Monitors and forecasts departmental fuel usage; places fuel orders and ensures fuel quality is acceptable for use by Town vehicles; assists other departments as needed.
- Monitors and enforces emission requirements; ensures all vehicles meet fuel emission standards. Ensures all vehicles have required tags and meet renewal requirements.
- Maintains inventory and maintenance records of equipment, supplies, and tools needed for departmental use.
Provides daily, weekly, and monthly reports to the Director of Public Works, Town Manager, Council or other departments on project standings as needed.
- Work with the Human Resources Department in the development of direct reports, staffing needs, and company compliance to company policies and Federal/State laws.
- Regularly update job descriptions to include departmental changes.
- Maintains records in compliance with Federal, State, and City regulations.
- Promotes a teamwork environment. Assist co-workers when necessary.
- Continues professional growth through outside seminars, professional organizations, and training classes
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a valid state-issued driver’s license.
Must have the following:
- Five (5) years of experience directing, planning, organizing, budgeting, and managing a vehicle and equipment fleet maintenance program.
- Bachelor's degree in business management, or related field.
- Experience in environmental or "green" management with alternative fuel and/or hybrid technology preferred.
- Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
