The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office is seeking a Medical Examiner's Technician to assist the Medical Examiner in conducting postmortem examinations and managing decedent and evidence intake and release. This position will involve hands-on experience working with postmortem bodies.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office provides death investigative and forensic autopsy services to Hennepin, Dakota, and Scott counties, as well as additional Minnesota and Wisconsin counties on a referral basis. We serve a population of over 1.9 million residents covering approximately 1,500 square miles. Our goal is to assist families, law enforcement agencies, and the legal system by determining a scientifically unbiased and logical cause and manner of death. The Office is a National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) accredited agency with a staff of board-certified forensic pathologists and an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited forensic pathology fellowship program.

Location and hours:
This position is located at the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office at 14250 County Road 62, Minnetonka, MN 55345. There is no public transportation to this facility. This position will work 8.5-hour shifts that vary between 6:45 a.m. and 5 p.m. Shifts are scheduled seven days a week including weekday, weekend, and holidays. Evening and weekend shift differentials apply for qualifying hours. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

About this position type:
This is a limited duration (temporary) full-time, benefit earning position expected to last up to two years.

In this position, you will:

Assist in postmortem examinations under the direction of the forensic pathologist, which includes opening bodies and removing organs; obtaining tissue and fluid samples; obtaining fingerprints and sewing and cleaning bodies after autopsy.
Perform radiologic exams on decedents under prescribed orders of the pathologist or investigator.
Process, inventory, release, and maintain appropriate chain-of-custody for the decedent and all personal effects and evidence.
Maintain morgue equipment, including cleaning and sterilizing equipment and autopsy suite after postmortem examination.
Collect, inventory, maintain, and dispose of retained tissue, specimens, medications, and other evidence per department retention schedule.
Coordinate transport of specimens and evidence to outside agencies for analysis, which may include delivery to local agencies and operation of a Medical Examiner vehicle.
Maintain proper supplies and instruments for autopsy and investigations.
Collect, package, and prepare biohazardous waste and linen for vendor pick up.

Need to have:

One of the following:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in forensic science, mortuary science, criminal justice, laboratory science, allied sciences, or related field.
- Four or more years of relevant work experience.
A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry at least 100 pounds multiple times per day with or without reasonable accommodation.
Ability to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment for extended periods of time.

Nice to have:

Experience:
- With patient health care.
- Handling and/or processing deceased bodies in a morgue, mortuary, or similar setting.
- Assisting with autopsies.
- Working in a medical examiner's office.
Skill in use of computers, related computer software, and information access and entry.
