Job Summary
This position executes the County’s code enforcement functions. The Code Enforcement Officer will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with Camden County codes, ordinances, and regulations. The Code Enforcement Officer will be responsible for investigating reported violations, conducting inspections, and enforcing local laws to maintain the safety, cleanliness, and quality of life in Camden County.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Receives and responds to complaints from the public concerning possible code violations, littering, building without a permit, right-of-way encroachments, illegal burning, property line disputes, zoning and land use violations, etc.
- Issue warnings, citations, and notices of violation as appropriate, and follow up to ensure timely compliance with orders and directives. Issues citations for code violations as necessary.
- Works with the public to mitigate code violations.
- Oversees the preparation of court cases for code enforcement; prepares motions for dismissal or continuance; testifies in court.
- Documents and photographs observed violations, gather evidence, and maintain accurate records of inspection findings and enforcement actions.
- Communicates effectively with property owners, tenants, and other stakeholders to explain code requirements, violations, and necessary corrective actions.
- Assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and educational initiatives to promote compliance with local codes and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals and objectives of the code enforcement program and the overall mission of the Camden County Board of Commissioners.
Additional Duties
- Performs other work as required or when directed by administration.
- In the event of an emergency, all Camden County employees are considered essential and may be required to perform alternate duties.

GUIDELINES
Guidelines include the Camden County Codes and Ordinances, Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commission standards, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. This position develops department guidelines.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of varied code enforcement duties. The unique nature of each case in question contributes to the complexity of the position.

- Contacts are typically with coworkers, judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers, fire personnel, contractors, property owners, business owners, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, motivate or influence persons, provide services, and to justify, defend, or negotiate matters.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking. The employee frequently lifts heavy objects, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
