Pay Range: $70,428.65 - $107,165.52
Job Summary
This position is responsible for directing the agency’s emergency medical services (EMS) operations.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Reviews EMS reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulations.
- Trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates and disciplines EMS personnel.
- Develops EMS protocols and procedures.
- Work closely with the Medical Director on department procedures and EMS protocol changes.
- Remains informed of changes to state EMS and local hospital standards and requirements.
- Responds to and investigates complaints regarding EMS services.
- Prepares and submits monthly reports to county administration.
- Ensures that personnel are properly trained and certified; maintains and updates employee certification records.
- Complete Annual evaluations on employees that are assigned to this position.
- Maintains and updates pharmacy agreements.
- Maintains and updates ambulance insurance coverage.
- Completes and submits annual EMS license forms and paperwork.
- Directs the maintenance of ambulance fleet to ensure readiness for state inspections; ensures that ambulances are properly maintained and stocked.
- Coordinates with vendors for new and replacement equipment.
- Coordinates the work of the ambulance committee to design and oversee the preparation of new ambulances.
- Work with EMS crews on difficult or complex patient needs.
- Work with Administrative manager on Ambulance billing questions and follow up.
- Oversees the annual renewal of the Medical Director contract.
- Oversees and follows-up with employee infectious control exposures.
- Will rotate through an “On Call” Schedule.

- Knowledge of firefighting, fire prevention, fire investigation, dispatch, and fire/emergency medical services fields.

- Knowledge of state EMS training and certification principles.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Fire Chief assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include standard EMS and Fire operating protocols and procedures, Georgia state EMS rules and regulations, Georgia EMS protocols, AHA ACLS guidelines, CMS guidelines and rules, and county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of varied administrative, managerial, supervisory, and technical duties. Strict rules and regulations contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to direct the agency’s EMS functions and to assist in directing the operations of the Fire Department. Successful performance helps ensure the protection of community life and property.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with co-workers, health care providers, hospital administrators, vendors, state officials, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, motivate personnel, and educate the public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
- The work is typically performed in an office, except while at fire or other emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over the EMS Training Officer and assigned personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
- Possession of appropriate state EMS certifications.
