POSITION SUMMARY
The Engineer I is an entry-level position for individuals who have recently completed an engineering degree. This role offers the opportunity to apply academic knowledge to real-world challenges, gain hands-on experience, and develop engineering skills. The Engineer I will work closely with the City Engineer to support various engineering projects. You will be involved in designing, analyzing, and testing engineering solutions, while also learning to manage projects and collaborate with multiple internal and external teams. Work is performed under the direction of the City Engineer.
Job Responsibilities (Include, but not limited to)
Assist in the design, development, and implementation of engineering solutions. Create detailed technical drawings, models, and specifications
Assist with preparation of ordinances, resolutions and consent items for action by the Board of Aldermen
Assist in preparing division budget; monitoring expenditures and preparing project cost estimates
Assist with the City’s MS-4 permit and requirements
Work on engineering projects, contributing to planning, scheduling, and execution phases. Participate in project meetings and provide updates on progress
Collect and analyze data related to engineering projects, using software tools and methodologies to ensure accuracy and reliability
Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including reports, manuals, and project records. Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations
Assist with Requests for Bids for bids and contracts for city-financed capital improvement projects; preparing Requests for Qualifications and Requests for Proposals for professional consulting services
Monitor sanitary/storm sewer systems, inventory, upkeep and installation of streetlights by utility companies
Assists the public by responding to questions or requests for information either in person, by phone of by electronic mail
Participate in training sessions, workshops, and seminars to enhance technical skills and knowledge in your engineering discipline
All other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year college with a degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering or a related engineering field of study
Possession of a valid state driver’s license with a clean driving record
Must successfully pass background and reference checks
Preferred
Internship or co-op experience in an engineering role
Basic knowledge of industry-specific standards and regulations
Pay & Benefits
$53,767 - $82,643 annually, depending on qualifications. Physical Demands & Work Environment
Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as motor vehicle, computer terminal, calculator, telephone, photocopier, fax machine, blue print machine, engineer’s scale, drafting instruments, and/or materials used in performing essential functions
Requires the ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring moderate skill, such as typing
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation
Requires the ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks
Work is performed primarily in an office setting subject to frequent interruptions and site visits to various City and community facilities and active construction project sites; often in inclement weather, with muddy or icy conditions. May be exposed to highly stressful situations and individuals who are irate or hostile; may be subject to long hours due to attendance at City Council and Committee meetings and other responsibilities required at this executive level
