The City's Sustainability Engagement Coordinator performs responsible work developing and implementing communication, outreach, and engagement strategies and tasks in support of the Office of Sustainability to increase participation and awareness of services, programs, and/or events. Work is performed under general supervision and reports to the Director of the Office of Sustainability.The preferred hiring amount for this position is between $55,751.71 - $68,534.19 Annually. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. - Develops, facilitates, and delivers strategic engagement (including outreach and education) plans and programs for internal and external communication in support of programmatic initiatives and activities.
- Creates, develops, and implements marketing, use of brands, advertising materials, and office publications.
- Develops and prepares accurate and comprehensive written educational material appropriate to a range of audiences.
- Plans, coordinates, and monitors community outreach events including Charlottesville neighborhoods and schools.
- Maintains and manages sustainability websites, social media, and other media projects (including content development), in coordination with Information Technology and Communication staff.
- Establishes engagement goals and metrics; Develops, monitors, and reports on the effectiveness of communication and marketing initiatives and makes recommendations.
- Develops and produces programmatic promotional and collateral materials and advertising.
- Reviews brand, logos, and colors in connection various mediums and promotional materials recommending brand enhancements.
- Serves as a media and public relations spokesperson, as well as drafts and distributes media releases and service notices.
- Provides facilitation and assistance to media, citizen, and visitor inquiries.
- Collects and analyzes data related to all assigned areas of responsibility; using data to evaluate marketing techniques and recommend improvements which may include utilizing focus groups or other feedback tools.
- Supports the evaluation of effectiveness of sustainability programs and projects and supports the development of plans and options for improvements.
- Identifies projects for potential grant assistance and coordinate with the staff.
- Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
- Regular and reliable attendance.

Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.
- Bachelor’s Degree in communications, marketing, environmental sustainability, public policy, or related field AND 1 year of experience with sustainability programs, marketing of a public service, or related area.
OR
- Associate degree/college-level coursework in communications, marketing, environmental sustainability, public policy, or related field AND 3 years of experience with sustainability programs, marketing of a public service, or related area.
OR
- High School Diploma or GED AND 5 years of experience with sustainability programs, marketing of a public service, or related area.
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Preferred:- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Public service marketing and operations experience.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:- Must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia Driver’s License and acceptable driving record according to city criteria.

Communication Skills- Advanced: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, citizens, media representatives, and others. Serves as media public relations and spokesperson for department. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing to a wide range of audiences. Contact may involve support of controversial positions or the negotiation of sensitive issues or important presentations. Evaluates customer satisfaction, develops cooperative associations, and utilizes resources to continuously improve customer satisfaction.
