Current opening exists in the Current Planning Division
Under supervision, the position is required to perform professional planning tasks ranging from average to high levels of difficulty, review development projects for compliance with State and local regulations and prepare a variety of written and graphic reports and studies for the Planning Commission and City Council. Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Characteristics: May work a varying schedule of hours which may include nights, early mornings, weekends and holidays.
- Assists in the preparation of site plans for developments including parking layouts and building locations.
- Assists in the preparation of architectural building elevations and other related drafting work.
- Works at the Planning counter to provide information on minor precise plans for room additions, patio covers, swimming pools, zoning development standards and code enforcement questions.
- Assists in processing "occupancy requests" for commercial and industrial developments, making inspections to evaluate on-site improvements that may be required by the City's development code.
- Assists in the research, compilation of information and inspection field trips for the preparation of special reports related to general planning work.
- Prepares staff reports and corresponding exhibits for developments scheduled for Planning Commission and City Council meetings as required.
- Assists in the preparation of General Plan, Development Map and Municipal Code amendments.
Knowledge of:
- Symbols, techniques and instruments used in drafting.
- California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
- Methods of research and analysis.
- Interpreting zoning and code requirements.
- Computer software programs, including graphic design programs.
Ability to:
- Write legible staff reports as well as business letters.
- Letter neatly and clearly by freehand or mechanical means.
- Maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the general public.
- Read and interpret engineering and architectural drawings and maps.
- Prepare PowerPoint presentations for City Council or Planning Commission meetings.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors in an office environment and outdoors in the field. The incumbent uses a computer keyboard and sits for prolonged periods of time. An incumbent push, pulls, stands, walks, and may twist, reach, bend, crouch, kneel and may grasp and lift planning records and other office items weighing up to 30 pounds. When in the field, an incumbent may walk on slippery/uneven surfaces and slopes, twist and be exposed to construction materials and dust. Tasks require visual perception and discrimination as well as oral communication ability; may require the ability to operate a motor vehicle. An incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be: A Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, or a closely related field, from an accredited college or university is required and a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a public planning agency.
A valid California Driver's License is required.
