The County of San Mateo is currently seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Principal Civil Engineer.
The Position
The Department of Public Works seeks well-qualified candidates for the position of Principal Civil Engineer. This is an amazing opportunity to join a hard-working team of results-driven professionals.
The Principal Civil Engineer plans, organizes, and directs the staff and operations of a major functional section within the Public Works Department, including utilities and watershed protection. This section includes the oversight and management of the County’s sewer, water, lighting, and drainage districts; cable TV; and environmental compliance monitoring. The Principal Civil Engineer is also responsible for the regulatory compliance for County sponsored projects including compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the California State Water Resources Control Board’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Municipal Regional Permit for stormwater discharge and other various types of permits. In addition, the Principal Civil Engineer supervises professional and technical staff related to these functions and performs a variety of professional engineering tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility.
This position will be vacated due to the retirement of the current Principal Civil Engineer in the Utilities and Watershed Protection Section. The Department is seeking to bring the new person on board in early February.

Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
- A typical way to qualify is three years of responsible supervisory engineer experience including difficult and complex field and office work in planning, design, construction, and maintenance of a variety of civil engineering projects.
Licensure/Certification: Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the state of California.
