City Light’s Electrification and Strategic Technology Division oversees the utility’s efforts related to transportation and building electrification, grid modernization, and strategic technology. The Lighting Design Lab (the Lab) sits within this division and serves as a public- and market-facing workforce education, training, and demonstration resource center.
Seattle City Light is seeking an
Electrification Technology and Training Program Manager who will be responsible for the Lab’s technology education and demonstration programming, offerings, and services.
As City Light’s customers electrify their homes, businesses, and vehicles, there is an increased need for utilities and market actors to stay abreast of the latest opportunities and capabilities of electrification-enabling technologies, and to ensure that they are being deployed in a manner that is both meeting customers’ needs and aligned with City Light’s strategic objectives for building electrification, transportation electrification, clean energy workforce development, and grid readiness.
The ideal candidate for this position is a seasoned subject matter expert who can build and strengthen the Lab’s regional reputation for technical expertise and best-in-class educational programming.
This position reports to Lighting Design Lab’s Executive Director.
Here is more about what you’ll be doing: - Supervise the Lab’s technical team. Establish expectations aligned with team and utility goals, and review performance. Direct and review work plans; assign work activities and priorities; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures; and meet with leadership and staff to identify and resolve challenges.
- Track and evaluate performance, capabilities, applications, and market position of electrification-enabling technologies including heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, DERs, EVSEs, etc.; establishing and promoting best practice approaches; developing educational offerings; and providing technical assistance to customers and trade allies to ensure project success.
- Research codes, policies, standards, test procedures, and performance specifications for establishing and evaluating performance of electrification-enabling technologies.
- Support regional efforts developing and implementing methods for evaluating and characterizing the performance of electrification-enabling technologies, including those that optimize energy efficiency, minimize load, and present load flexibility and demand-side energy management opportunities.
- Oversee the development of technical research papers, reports, white papers, presentations, and other relevant industry publications.
- Identify and negotiate acquisition of market-available and emerging technologies for demonstration purposes.
- Develop and deliver and oversee the development and delivery of educational content in the form of classes, seminars, hands-on settings, presentations, webinars, demonstrations, and technical resources targeted at a variety of technical and non-technical audiences, including in training content in support of external workforce development programs.
- Serve as a technical expert representing Seattle City Light and the Lab in internal and external settings. Advise internal and external stakeholders on technical specifications, requirements, and needs related to codes, standards, and program design.
- Seek out, engage, and coordinate closely with portfolio managers and workgroups across the utility to ensure program alignment.
- Collaborate with regional and national agencies such as the Pacific Northwest Electric Power and Conservation Planning Council's Regional Technical Forum advisory committee; Bonneville Power Administration's Emerging Technologies program Technical Advisory Group; Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; and other agencies and organizations, as applicable.
- Supervise the development of demonstrations, learning aids, and field studies.
- Manage an annual budget to include development, oversight, and requests for funding.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has: Education: Baccalaureate Degree in Energy Management, Engineering, Architecture or a related discipline
Experience: 3 years’ experience in professional commercial/industrial energy management analysis, with at least one year of supervisory or lead worker experience (Other combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability).
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities: - Advanced degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, building science, architecture computer science, data management, data security, or related field (or a combination of education and/or experience with building electrification, distributed energy resource and/or decarbonization technology programs that provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
- More than five years’ experience as a professional commercial/industrial energy management analyst
- Electrical circuit and system design and operation, data network design and operation (hardware and software).
- Experience with or detailed understanding of utility electric service connection processes and policies.
- Self-starter and strong leader with sound judgment and ability to identify and develop solutions to complex technical problems. Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
- Strong electrical or computer engineering and IT/data network background with an understanding of and interoperability and compatibility concepts for controls and networked and wireless devices.
- Strong experience in building electrical and mechanical systems engineering.
- Exceptional customer services skills with the ability to translate complex information for a non-technical audience.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize, develop, and implement methods for technology improvements.
- Experience coordinating the efforts of multi-discipline, multi-agency project teams to complete work.
- Experience with developing and delivering classroom training and education, and presenting at conferences.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with experience developing professional papers.

The full salary range for this position is $62.14to $72.40 per hour.
