The City of Vacaville is seeking a Deputy Director of Public Works/Traffic Engineer who will be assigned to oversee and manage the Traffic Engineering Section of the Public Works, Engineering Services Division. The Deputy Director of Public Works/Traffic Engineer will report directly to the Director of Public Works.
Salary Information:
$164,781 - $200,298 annually

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule at the Director's discretion.
The primary objective of this position is to plan, direct, and oversee the traffic engineering functions for the City; and to organize and supervise the Traffic Engineering staff towards that objective.
Specific responsibilities of the Deputy Director of Public Works/Traffic Engineer include, but are not limited to:
Develop and maintain short and long-range transportation plans, goals, and work programs addressing all transportation modes.
Conduct and evaluate traffic engineering impact studies to assess traffic impacts, volume, speed, accidents, etc.
Collaborate with the Director of Public Works to plan, forecast, design and budget for major transportation improvement projects to be incorporated into the City's Capital Improvement Program budget.
Provide expertise in the planning, development, and design of new and modified traffic signals, roadway geometric design, neighborhood traffic calming, and traffic signal coordination plans.
Collaborate with the City's Community Development Department to plan and understand existing land use and future land use trends to be able to maintain the City's traffic model and accurately forecast future traffic demands of the City's roadway network.
Coordinate transportation-related matters with the Solano County Transportation Authority (STA) and the Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), and other local, regional, state, and federal transportation agencies.

ABOUT YOU
The Ideal Candidate for this position will:
Have proven ability to oversee a public works division, including setting priorities, organizing resources, and driving high standards of quality and efficiency in work outputs.
Possess extensive experience with traffic signal systems, lighting standards, signal timing, and coordination.
Have experience with the authority in evaluating and approving traffic projects and ensuring alignment with municipal codes and city standards.
Be skilled in developing and implementing division policies, setting clear goals, and managing comprehensive budgets.
Possess strong fiscal oversight capabilities to support strategic funding, resource forecasting, and adherence to fiscal control systems.
Be well-versed in monitoring traffic-related legislation and regulations, and capable of preparing detailed reports, studies, and presentations for city councils, planning commissions, and public stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to completion of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in engineering or a related field.
Experience: Six (6) years performing supervisory-level professional traffic engineering work in a public or commercial setting. Experience working in metropolitan jurisdiction is desirable.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Professional Traffic Engineer in California is highly desirable. Possession of valid registration as a Civil Engineer in California, in addition to extensive experience in traffic engineering work, may also be qualifying.
Select positions may require the possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record as conditions of initial and continued employment.
