The City of Plano is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Kennel Attendant to join our team. This role is responsible for maintaining clean and organized office and animal kennel areas, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all animals. Duties include the general care and feeding of animals, as well as performing daily cleaning tasks to uphold the highest standards of hygiene and comfort for the animals in our care. Examples Of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
- Maintains shelter areas (inside and outside) by cleaning and disinfecting animal kennels; removes litter and debris; washes feeding utensils, pans, equipment, etc.; performs minor equipment and kennel repairs.
- Maintains stock and storage rooms in a neat and organized manner; stocks inventory of food, litter, cleaning supplies, etc.
- May be required to assist with and/or perform animal euthanasia in accordance with State law and department standards.
- Performs bathing and light grooming of adoptable animals.
- Provides general care and feeding of animals; may assist with administering medication and vaccinations to animals; exercises animals in designated areas.
- Observes animals for any signs of early disease, illness, or distress; reports any findings to Animal Services Supervisor and/or other superiors.
- Assists office personnel with receiving animals; greets and provides general customer service and information to citizens.
- Inputs data into computer system for required animal tracking.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

- Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Decisions: The incumbent must prioritize work to meet the needs of the Division.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of: Common wild and domestic animals
; animal handling techniques, methods, policies, and procedures; animal behavior and proper handling; proper cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection procedures; signs of disease or distress in animals.
Skill in: Working with minimal supervision; following written and verbal instructions.
Education: No formal education; must be at least 17 years of age. High school diploma or GED preferred.
Experience: None required. One (1) year of animal handling or related experience preferred.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver’s license or valid State Identification. Texas Certified Euthanasia Technician certification preferred. Must obtain and maintain all required licenses and certifications in accordance with applicable State laws and/or City policies.
Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Incumbents in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach for animals in order to clean animal housing areas and provide general care and medical treatment. In record keeping, the position may push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Positions in this classification frequently lift, move, and carry animals and/or supplies that typically weigh up to 100 pounds. The position requires firm grasping and wrist extension and rotation on a frequent basis. Positions in this classification occasionally lift and carry reports and records that typically weigh less than 10 pounds. The position is frequently exposed to loud noise such as barking of dogs and other animal noises. The position works outdoors as well as indoors and is subject to variable weather conditions and exposure to animal bites and scratches, potentially infectious diseases or allergies, as well as wetness and moisture.
