Position Summary:
The Education Coordinator will work within the Juvenile Intervention Center and is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing educational programs for youth in custody. The coordinator will ensure that all educational services align with state educational standards and legal requirements, while also addressing the unique learning needs of detained youth. The role involves working with educators, detention staff, mental health professionals, and external education agencies to provide a supportive, rehabilitative learning environment that fosters academic growth and personal development.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Design and implement education programs that comply with state standards, including core subjects like math, reading, science, and history.
- Tailor curricula to meet the diverse needs of students with varying educational backgrounds and learning levels.
- Integrate life skills, vocational training, and social-emotional learning into the curriculum to support rehabilitation and reduce recidivism.
- Ensure students' Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) are followed and updated regularly in collaboration with special education professionals.
- Serve as the liaison between the detention center and local school districts, ensuring continuity in education for youth transitioning in and out of the center.
- Collaborate with caseworkers, mental health professionals, and juvenile justice staff to develop personalized education plans.
- Coordinate with external agencies and community organizations to provide additional educational resources and support.
- Conduct assessments to evaluate each student’s academic level and create tailored learning plans.
- Monitor and track students' progress, adjusting curricula as necessary to meet their needs.
- Maintain accurate and confidential academic records for all students.
- Ensure teachers have the tools and resources needed to work effectively in a detention environment.
- Conduct regular evaluations of teaching staff to maintain program quality and effectiveness.
- Ensure the educational program meets all legal requirements, including those related to special education and youth with disabilities.
- Maintain compliance with Center policies and procedures regarding student safety, behavior management, and rehabilitation goals.
- Provide regular reports on educational outcomes to Superintendent and other relevant stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in education, Special Education, or a related field Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in education, with experience in alternative education, special education, or at-risk youth settings preferred. Strong understanding of trauma-informed education practices and behavioral management. Strong verbal, written, and computer skills; Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications: Valid teaching certification or licensure. Experience working in a juvenile justice or correctional environment. Knowledge of state and federal education laws related to youth in detention. Familiarity with restorative justice principles and how they can be applied in educational settings.
