General Description
Specialized and responsible work supporting the City of Miami Gardens’ internal and external communications through research, writing, outreach and dissemination of information.
Work involves, but is not limited to, writing and editing fact sheets, media advisories, news releases, speeches, talking points, emails, newsletters, web content, presentations and other written communications as assigned. All work is performed applying journalistic and public relations practices and techniques, exercising considerable independent judgement and discretion.
Essential Job Functions

Gathers information from City Departments, third-party partners and other stakeholders in preparation for communication efforts.
Liaises with City Departments to assist with communication needs related to ongoing projects and programs.
Creates, manages and maintains media contact lists.
Pitches story ideas relating to the City of Miami Gardens or a Department to news media.
Attends meetings to gather information on events/services.
Creates and maintains news coverage reports or clips.
Monitors news media and alerts Assistant City Manager, or designee, of news developments and news opportunities relevant to the City of Miami Gardens.
Performs other related work as requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and punctuation. Knowledge of municipal government functions and general methods of operations. Knowledge of and ability to proficiently build, navigate and manage social media platforms and forums. Knowledge of photography and graphic designs.
Ability to conceptualize ideas into comprehensive final product marketing strategies. Ability to effectively articulate the City’s point of view and to translate information and concepts into easily readable language. Ability to work in a high pressure, fast paced environment; independently shifting priorities as needed to meet deadlines. Ability to execute assigned duties with flawless tact and diplomacy. Ability to think and act strategically; respecting the confidentiality in the decision-making process.
Excellent oral, written, presentation, public speaking and interpersonal skills. Excellent analytical, management and organizational skills. Excellent creativity and problem-solving skills.
Computer skills including graphic design software and Microsoft Office; willingness to learn necessary computer software as needed.
Education And Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field. Two (2) years of professional experience in journalism, editorial writing, page designee and/or internal/external communications is required. Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record throughout employment.

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, sit, stand, hear, use of hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, read and write English. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office equipment; such as but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier and fax machine.
Work will require a considerable amount of time spent using a personal computer. Work is performed fast-paced environment, both indoors and outdoors throughout the community. Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull articles weighing up to 20 pounds. May be on call 24 hours a day. When working under stringent time constraints, work may become stressful.
The noise level in the work environment various from moderately quiet to noisy.

The City of Miami Gardens offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 176 hours of Personal Time Off (PTO) in lieu of vacation and sick time and 12 paid holidays (11 holidays and 1 floating holiday).
The City participates in the retirement plan administered by the Florida Retirement System (FRS), which requires a mandatory 3% contribution.
