Job Description
Park Rangers are responsible for controlling and securing various City parks within the City of Avondale. Park Rangers give front-line customer service to visitors and enforce rules, regulations, and ordinances related to Parks & Recreation area usage. Park Rangers will patrol by vehicle or foot, complete facility checks, and maintain situational awareness.
Essential Functions
Patrols City parks and trail areas by remaining visible to park patrons and engaging the general public, ultimately creating a safe atmosphere. Provides customer services professionally and courteously to staff and visitors.
Applies City ordinances in and around park facilities and surrounding areas. Prevents unauthorized access to restricted areas. Patrols City parks by a marked Park Ranger vehicle, side-by-side off-road vehicle, or foot patrol. Reports inappropriate, suspicious, or unsafe behavior. Relates conditions and damages to all playground equipment, restrooms, ramadas, and athletic facilities. Enforces City ordinances and issues citations for minor ordinance violations. Educates visitors on Parks & Recreation rules and regulations.
Assists as a backup to the Animal Control Unit. Respond to aggressive animal calls; investigates reports of animal cruelty or bite cases; and documents general animal control activity by preparing complaint reports and issuing citations for City ordinance violations.
Provides security and engages in City events at parks or recreational areas.
Maintains daily activity logs; responds to traffic accidents providing traffic control for the Police Department when needed; and assists in emergencies by notifying Police or Fire.
Answers phone calls for service in the parks. Responsible for communicating via police radio or computer.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
A High School diploma or GED equivalency is required.
One (1) year of experience as a park ranger, animal control officer, community services officer, or a related field.
Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
A valid Arizona Operator’s Driver License.
Must complete and pass a field training program. Must complete Terminal Operator Certification (TOC) within 6 months of hire. Required to wear a ballistic vest and body-worn Camera (BWC), complete a taser certification, and be trained in Defense Tactics (DT) with less lethal weapons and tactics.
Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, polygraph, psychological exam, and fingerprinting.
Supplemental Information
Work requires the ability to read training materials, police reports, City codes, laws, and general correspondence.
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Work will require the ability to write reports, letters, victim rights forms, witness statements, and general correspondence.
Work may require the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers, or temporary employees.
Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies and procedures.
