Description
The City of Chanhassen’s Parks and Recreation Intern is responsible for the management, supervision, coordination, and evaluation of various summer recreation and leisure-oriented activities in the City of Chanhassen’s Parks & Recreation department.
Recreation Programs Managed Include
- Summer Concert Series. Communicate with vendors and artists, supervise volunteers, respond to public inquiries, prepare evaluations and reports, and serve as the staff point of contact at performances.
- 4th of July Celebration events. Plan and supervise youth and adult events as part of a 3-day, 70,000+ person special event. Communicate with vendors, event partners, event registrants, and seasonal staff, manage logistics for events with 50-500 participants, and oversee budgets for assigned events.
- Teen Volunteer Program. Manage and supervise 15-25 thirteen to sixteen-year-old volunteers, volunteering between 5-25 hours/week at department programs. Develop trainings, provide schedules, communicate with volunteers and parents, and provide evaluation and career development to volunteers.
- Facility Reservations. Process and track picnic shelter facility reservations, communicate with patrons before, during, and after reservations, and assist with rental evaluations.
- Lake Ann Park Concessions & Watercraft Rentals. Track sales and trends for the Lake Ann Park Concession Stand and Watercraft Rental Program. Assist in data analysis and preparing end-of-season reports.
- Other programs, events, or projects as needed.
The Parks & Recreation Intern works under the supervision of the Recreation Manager and is an integral part of the Parks & Recreation team. This position is responsible for day-to-day management of assigned programs and works with a high degree of independence. The Parks & Recreation Intern has continuous public contact and requires tact, courtesy, good judgement, and excellent customer service skills.
The Park & Recreation Intern works primarily Monday-Friday, 40 hours/week with some evening and weekend hours.
Internship will run from mid-May through late August.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must be a college graduate or current student, have completed the necessary requirements for their college or university, and possess strong communication and organizational skills. Park & Leisure Studies major or field of study preferred, but not required. Prior work experience in recreation services, youth programming, customer service, and/or marketing preferred, but not required.
Candidates MUST be available to work July 2-4, Thursday evenings, and other occasional evenings and weekends.
Desired Qualifications
Prior experience working with recreation programs or special events.
Prior experience working in customer service.
Experience working with people of all ages.
