The City of Santa Fe Springs seeks applicants for the position of Instructor Lifeguard I. This is an hourly, at-will, non-benefited position with approximately 20-25 hours per week.
Under direct supervision provides and monitors the safety of patrons and staff at the City Aquatic Center at all times while on duty.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the entry level position in the series. It is distinguished from the level II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives supervision from the Instructor Lifeguard III and Community Services Supervisor.

1. Monitors and ensures the safety of patrons and staff at the City Aquatic Center.
2. Teaches swimming lessons to all age groups and ability levels.
3. Performs emergency care to individuals as necessary and responds to unsafe conditions potential hazards.
4. Performs routine maintenance to pool, aquatic equipment, and other assigned areas.
5. Explains and enforces pool safety rules and regulations.
C. Other Job Specific Duties
1. Maintains effective interpersonal relations with the public and the staff.
2. Administers first aid and CPR as needed.
3. Maintains accurate records; prepares written reports.
4. Performs related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The following requirements generally demonstrate possession of the minimum requisite knowledge and ability necessary to perform the duties of the position. A typical way to obtain these would be:
- Experience as a pool or beach lifeguard; one (1) years experience preferred.
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.
- American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED Certification.
- American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety.
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate.
The City requires training certificates be submitted at the time of application. Supplemental Information:
EXAMINATION PROCESS AND TESTING COMPONENTS:Following a review of all applications, qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination components listed below will be used to evaluate the qualifications of those invited. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% on each phase of the examination process in order proceed to the next phase. The examination components will be conducted as follows:
I. IN-WATER ASSESSMENT Candidates will be tested on the following in-water skills & abilities test:
- Tread water for two (2) minutes using legs only.
- Circuit Test (Deep Pool). Complete the timed swim within one (1) minute, 40 seconds.
- Stroke Evaluation - Swim each of the following strokes for Twenty-Five (25) yards.
- Freestyle/Crawl Stroke
- Butterfly
- Elementary Backstroke
- Sidestroke
- Breaststroke
- Back-Crawl Stroke
II. ORAL PANEL INTERVIEWCandidates who successfully pass the In-Water Assessment will be invited to participate in the Oral Panel Interview. Candidates who successfully pass the Oral Panel Interview will be placed on the Eligibility List.
NEPOTISM POLICY: Relatives may be appointed regardless of the designation of full or part-time classification. Candidates with relatives employed by the City will be excluded from applying for a vacancy if one or more of the following criteria exist: 1) The appointment of a relative would place one in a supervisory capacity directly over the other 2) The appointment would create a situation in which it is conceivable personal gain for one could be obtained by the actions of the other 3) The appointment would create a situation where performance or non-performance of either would have a direct effect upon the performance of the other 4) The appointment would create a situation where the confidentiality of either could be compromised.
