The Valley County Sheriff’s Office is recruiting for seasonal
Marine Deputies to patrol county waterways to help ensure public safety and to protect individual and community property. These positions promote boater safety through education, public assistance, and enforcement of boating laws and regulations. We are looking for people who love boating, have an interest in law enforcement, and enjoy working outside during the spring, summer, and fall months.
As these are seasonal positions with Valley County, they are limited to no more than 8 months in duration per year and do not qualify for employee benefits.
Typical Duties & ResponsibilitiesTypical Responsibilities include patrolling Valley County’s numerous waterways, monitoring activity to ensure compliance with state and local boating and waterway use laws, rules, and regulations. Additional responsibilities include boarding boats and conducting inspections, explaining boating rules and regulations, issuing citations, investigating accident and crime scenes, taking suspects and offenders into custody, responding to emergency calls and rendering aid, educating the public on boating safety, loading and unloading boats on and off trailers, conducting routine maintenance on all marine equipment, and testifying in court proceedings.
As these positions require significant direct contact with the public, employees can expect to be exposed to a wide variety of people with varying backgrounds and behaviors. Exposure to all kinds of climate and weather events should also be expected. And of course, employees can expect to spend considerable time in boats and on the water.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should have a high school diploma or an equivalent, be 21 years of age or older with at least 2 years of proven work experience, possess a valid driver’s license, be able to deal with all types of behaviors and personalities in a fair and professional manner, be physically fit and able to swim, be willing and able to render first aid, and be willing and able to carry and use a firearm. As this is a law enforcement position, anyone interested will also undergo a stringent background screening including their criminal and previous work histories. And of course, anyone interested will need to pass a physical and a drug test.
