The open Assistant Director of Public Works, reporting directly to the Public Works Director, is responsible for overseeing the divisions of Streets and Drainage, Facilities Maintenance, Fleet, and Right-of-Way Management. This role plays a vital part in driving strategic initiatives and ensuring the efficient, high-quality delivery of essential services to McKinney’s residents. The Assistant Director will combine operational expertise with strong leadership to manage the maintenance, operation, and renewal of the city’s critical infrastructure.
This position supports the development and execution of the department’s goals, policies, and priorities, ensuring that each operational area aligns with McKinney’s growth and evolving needs. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with the Director and senior management to implement effective strategies that meet the city’s expanding demands while maintaining service excellence.
In collaboration with the Director and senior leadership, the Assistant Director helps shape plans for organizational changes, timing, and prioritizing key infrastructure improvements. Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate efforts and collaborate with other City departments to align organizational activities.
- Oversee and administer contracted projects for the City as assigned.
- Assist in the preparation of the department’s annual budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and financial oversight.
- Present reports, updates, and recommendations to the City Council, boards, commissions, and relevant citizen groups.
- Address and resolve citizen inquiries or complaints related to public works services.
- Conduct field inspections to monitor ongoing work and assess project completion.
- Lead by example, fostering respect and trust within the department and with the community.
- Cultivate a knowledgeable, productive, and service-oriented team culture.
- Provide timely, comprehensive performance evaluations for direct reports.
Experience and Education
- This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, construction management, or a related field, plus six years of progressively responsible experience in public works utility operations management, including at least five years in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
- At least five years’ experience working in municipal government is preferred.
- Candidates must pass a background check and drug screen. Additional qualifying education or experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, or abilities may be considered as a substitution.
