This position performs a variety of duties which include conducting detailed investigations of crime scenes and other violations of local, federal or state law. This is a full-time, non-exempt, on-site position. Testing and interview dates will be provided to those selected to move forward in the hiring process. - 2026 Salary: $123,094 ($59.18 per hour).
- 2025 Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 2104: $117,228 to $129,292 ($56.36 to $62.16 per hour).

- This position will work at the Anoka County Sheriff's Office, located at 13301 Hanson Blvd NW, Andover, MN 55304.
- Once hired, crime scene detectives are required to live within 30 miles of the Anoka County Sheriff's Office in Andover within one year after completing the one-year probation period. During probation, and after probation but before relocating to a permanent residence within the required distance, crime scene detectives are required to stay at a location within a 30-mile distance of the Sheriff's Office when assigned as the 'A' or 'B' shift detective, including on-calls Job Duties and Responsibilities These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Crime Scene Detective.
- Conduct detailed investigations of crime scenes and other violations of local, federal or state law.
- Collect, analyze and preserve evidence in a manner that preserves its integrity so it can be used throughout a criminal investigation.
- Direct crime scene investigators and other law enforcement personnel at crime scenes.
- Conduct interviews, examine records, monitor suspects, and participate in raids and arrests.
- Use proper methods to search for, collect, and maintain various types of evidence including, scene documentation, photography, videography, scene sketches, measurements, fingerprints, DNA, biological sample collections, footwear, toolmarks, time impressions and others.
- Identify scope, timing, and direction of investigations and justifies changes in that criteria based on findings.
- Compile and report detailed investigations findings for criminal proceedings.
- Obtain and implement search and arrest warrants.
- Provide court testimony regarding observations and determinations of criminal activity and assist the Medical Examiner's Office with the ocumentation of autopsies and collection of evidence.
- Gather and record physical information about arrested suspects including fingerprints, weight and height measurements, and photographs.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group. Qualifications and Requirements: Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed
- Must currently be employed as a peace officer in the state of Minnesota.
- Requires 3 years of full-time (2,080 annual hours) paid work experience as a peace officer in Anoka County or 5 years full-time (2,080 annual hours) paid work experience as a peace officer in the state of Minnesota.
- Must be able to provide credible testimony.
- Must undergo, and pass, a thorough physical and psychological examination, and thorough background investigation. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed
- Degree in Criminal Justice or related field
- Knowledge of laws, judicial procedures, regulations, rules and guidelines related to crime and evidence
- Currently have or ability to obtain Certified Crime Scene Investigator (CCSI) credential through International Association for Identification (IAI).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills Physical Demands and Work Conditions
- Standard office environment, correctional and detention institutions, field offices, courtrooms, offender'/clients' homes, hospitals and schools, and various community settings depending on assignment
- Work activities may involve contact with and the supervision of juveniles or adults charged with major or minor criminal offenses, and/or individuals who may be hostile, dangerous, threatening, armed, and aggressive and/or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Consequently, some assignments may encounter stressful and physically threatening situations
- Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness
- Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds
- Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties
- Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills
- Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing
- Physical activity may include handling/carrying equipment, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Periodic high levels of exertion in the form of self-defense, pursuit, or restraint of an individual is possible for some assignments
- Lifting over 100 lbs. in emergency situations
- Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to various law enforcement equipment depending on assignment
