Description
The Specialty Coordinator – Athletics is responsible for the leadership, coordination, and growth of year-round athletic programming, including youth and adult leagues, tournaments, outdoor field rentals, and community athletic initiatives.
This position provides operational oversight across all athletic seasons and serves as the primary liaison between athletes, parents, coaches, instructors, Parks and Recreation partners, and organizational leadership. The coordinator ensures program quality, safety compliance, administrative efficiency, and continued participation growth.
Representative Job Duties
- Assist and oversee year-round athletic programming, including Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer leagues, tournaments, outdoor programs, and field rentals
- Ensure operational excellence across all practices, games, events, and facility usage, maintaining consistency, safety standards, and program quality
- Develop and execute recruitment and outreach strategies to grow youth and adult participation, including proactive community engagement, partnership development, and cold calling initiatives
- Serve as the on-site authority during practices, games, rentals, and special events, addressing operational, safety, and conduct matters while enforcing league rules and organizational policies
- Provide assistance and direct support to coaches and instructors, including communication of expectations, performance standards, scheduling coordination, and instructor payroll processing
- Coordinate logistics for tournaments and special events, including staffing, officials, facilities, registration management, setup, breakdown, and post-event reporting
- Collaborate with Parks and Recreation departments regarding facility scheduling, rentals, programming coordination, and community initiatives
- Manage administrative operations including scheduling, record keeping, reporting, budgeting support, payroll documentation, and compliance tracking
- Maintain positive and professional relationships with athletes, parents, instructors, community partners, and organizational leadership to ensure a high-quality program experience
Job Requirements - As Determined By the City Of Southfield
- Strong interest in athletics, sports, and recreation.
- Ability to work in the evenings and weekends with a flexible schedule.
- Prior experience with outdoor activities such as softball and indoor activities such as basketball is highly desirable
- Basic knowledge or experience in field maintenance (e.g., field grooming, lining, and repair) is a plus.
- Experience with scorekeeping or officiating for indoor sports is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be reliable, punctual, and maintain a positive attitude under pressure.
Physical & Schedule Requirements
- Ability to be active and on-site during practices, games, rentals, and events
- Ability to lift and move athletic equipment as needed
- Evening and weekend work is mandatory and required based on program schedules
- Seasonal workload fluctuations based on programming demand
