About the Internship
The City of Hillsboro is accepting applications for a Utility Billing Finance Tech Intern within our Finance Department’s Utility Billing Division.
This internship offers hands-on experience in municipal finance operations with a strong customer service focus. The selected intern will support day-to-day utility billing functions while gaining exposure to public sector financial systems, account management processes, and customer-facing service delivery.
The Utility Billing Division interacts with every department across the City and serves more than 30,000 utility customers. The team manages customer accounts, billing, payment collection, reconciliation, and business license processing, while also helping educate community members about available assistance programs and resources. This role offers a unique opportunity to see how financial operations, customer service, and community support come together in local government.

What You’ll Be Doing This Summer
- Perform routine technical-level utility billing support work
- Assist with customer service inquiries by phone, in person, and email
- Support utility account creation, maintenance, and service changes, including starting and stopping services
- Assist with billing, payment collection, and account reconciliation
- Learn and support the business license process for new and renewing businesses
- Research basic account discrepancies and help identify solutions
- Assist with updates to division policies and procedures
- Potentially select and complete a small process improvement project, based on division needs and intern interest

- Has a strong interest in front line level finance, accounting, business processes, or public administration
- Demonstrates strong customer service skills
- Is comfortable interacting professionally with customers by phone, in person, and email
- Shows attention to detail and accuracy in their work
- Has basic computer proficiency and comfort learning new systems

- Enjoys problem-solving and learning how processes work in a real-world setting
- Works well independently and as part of a team
Preference may be given to students currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in a relevant field of study.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in an educational institution (secondary or post-secondary), or have graduated within the last three months

Internship Classification Summary
The principal function of this class is to provide a learning opportunity to students interested in working in a public service field. This position can include analytical and administrative services in support of department and city-wide programs and projects related to a student's area of study. Incumbents, as assigned by position and supervisor, may be responsible for performing project research and recommendations; preparing information and/or supporting documents for meetings or projects; maintaining databases; providing technical assistance; participating in community outreach; and facilitating internal and/or external customer service. This position will perform work under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor.

Anticipated Work Schedule
This internship is available Monday through Friday. The anticipated schedule is approximately Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM though the exact hours may vary based on the intern’s availability and department needs. Alternative schedules, such as five days, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM, may also be considered. Final schedules will be discussed and mutually agreed upon with the selected candidate.
