The Town of Lexington is accepting applications for the position of Development Compliance Officer in the Planning and Building Department. This position performs professional and technical work administering and enforcing the Town’s development-related ordinances and regulations. Responsibilities include investigating complaints, conducting field inspections, enforcing zoning, sign, nuisance, and land development regulations, and working collaboratively with property owners, businesses, contractors, and developers to achieve voluntary compliance.
This position also assists with implementation of the Town’s Landscape Ordinance by reviewing landscape plans, conducting landscape and tree preservation inspections, and verifying compliance with approved development plans prior to issuance of Certificates of Occupancy. The successful candidate must exercise independent judgment while balancing customer service with consistent ordinance enforcement and serving as a liaison between the Town, property owners, contractors, developers, and the public.
The ideal candidate is customer-service oriented, exercises sound judgment, communicates effectively, and demonstrates professionalism, initiative, and strong interpersonal skills.
Position requires an Associate’s degree in Planning, Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Environmental Science, Construction Management, Engineering, Geography, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combination of education, training and progressively responsible experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
Preferred qualifications include two or more years of experience in code enforcement, zoning administration, planning, development review, construction inspection, municipal government, or a related field. Experience interpreting and enforcing municipal ordinances, reviewing development plans, and conducting field inspections is highly desirable. Knowledge of GIS software, landscape compliance, and applicable certifications (or the ability to obtain them) is a plus. A valid South Carolina driver’s license is required.
