A
Plumbing Inspector is primarily responsible for the enforcement of the State Plumbing Code. In addition, the
Plumbing Inspector may perform inspections related to Michigan Department of Health regulations pertaining to water service and drainage connections. Assignments are broad in scope and require the use of mature judgment and tact. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Building Official and/or Deputy Building Official.
Certification Premium: Employees who possess the required inspector certification(s) receive an additional
$5.00 per hour certification premium for all regular hours worked.
Essential Job Functions
A
Plumbing Inspector may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)
- Inspect plumbing installations during construction and upon completion for compliance with the State Plumbing Code and for quality of workmanship.
- Enforce the provisions of the Michigan Department of Health regulations as they pertain to water service and drainage connections.
- Assist contractors and plumbers in making out applications for permits and issue permits.
- Inspect all new and repaired sewer connections in all buildings; also inspect new and repaired water service connections.
- Investigate complaints regarding plumbing and sewers.
- Assist contractors and plumbers in conforming to local and state cross connection codes and regulations.
- Prepare reports and keep records.
- Perform related work assigned.

A
Plumbing Inspector, upon application, shall have the following training and experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Currently registered, or eligible to become registered as a "Plumbing Inspector" and “Plan Reviewer”, by the State of Michigan.
- Licenses: A valid motor vehicle operator's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Qualifications For Employment
- Thorough knowledge of the methods and materials used in plumbing and their applications to various conditions.
- Thorough knowledge of the State Plumbing Code
- Some knowledge of commonly used computer software.
- Ability to understand and interpret blueprints and specifications.
- Ability to maintain good working relations with plumbers, contractors, property owners, trades personnel, the public and other employees.
- Ability to carry out complex oral and written directions.
- Ability to make comprehensive and clear reports in connection with work assignments.
- Ability to schedule work activities in an efficient and productive manner.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Ability to walk or stand for long periods of time on a daily basis, to climb stairs in buildings inspected, to access tight or cramped spaces for inspection purposes, and to drive to and from inspection sites.
