About The Position

As the Shelter Division Manager, you would provide leadership and direction for the day-to-day operation of Maricopa County’s Animal Care and Control shelters and ensure that quality care is provided in accordance with the department’s mission, goals, and philosophy. We will look to you to drive positive change by leading staff, removing barriers, and managing high-pressure situations with emotional intelligence to enhance operational efficiency. This position requires the employee to be in the office for all hours worked.

We Require
- Three years of management or supervisor experience in an animal welfare or animal control organization, including experience in business management or operations
- Bachelor’s degree in public administration or a closely related field
- A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
We Also Value
- Master’s degree in public administration or a closely related field
- Advanced management or supervisory experience or certifications in an animal welfare or animal control organization
- Extensive project management or logistics experience
Job Contributions
- Direct, supervise, and evaluate supervisory staff and provide regular feedback and performance evaluations in person. Ensure staff has the proper training, tools, and support to excel in all areas
- Ensure staffing levels are adequate and maintained through strategic scheduling, recruitment, and onboarding oversight
- Ensure the proper in-shelter monitoring and management of inventories, capacity, shelter feeding, shelter cleaning, and corresponding operational budgets. Disclose cost overruns, submit recommendations, and implement solutions to problems
- Perform animal handling, including cleaning, movement, and restraint as needed in the shelter
- Implement best sheltering practices in animal welfare as appropriate and stay updated on industry trends, including implementing training procedures to ensure staff development and continuous improvement
- Analyze the effectiveness of programs, policies, and standard operating procedures through audits and update documents and practices as needed
- Provide timely, accurate operational reports and demonstrate exceptional organizational skills
- Communicate professionally and effectively with all internal and external customers, including staff, volunteers, partners, elected officials, and members of the public in person, email, and phone
- Assist other animal welfare organizations upon request with training or presentations on behalf of the department and represent the department at community functions and special events. Assist with special projects as assigned
Working Conditions
- Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver’s license
- Work is predominately performed in an animal shelter with exposure to extreme and varying temperatures, excessive noise, dogs and cats with unknown temperaments or behaviors, animal waste and fluids, deceased animals, cleaning chemicals, and zoonotic diseases
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk on all types of surfaces that are sometimes slippery, uneven, and rough
- Must be able to lift up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly
