Job Summary
This position is located in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and is responsible for accessioning and documenting biological material for the purpose of evidential testing. This position may perform a limited number of toxicological examinations and other duties as required.
Duties And Responsibilities
The Forensic Toxicologist (Accessioned) accessions evidential biological specimens (blood, urine, tissues, etc.) for the purpose of medicolegal testing. As part of this process, the incumbent ensures that all specimens are accurately received, inspected, inventoried, aliquoted, and documented. Ensures that specimen information is accurately entered into a computer database. In addition, all associated paperwork is critically reviewed, scanned, copied and/or filed as needed. Ensures that the chain-of-custody is maintained at all times. Identifies, resolves, and reports inconsistencies and non-conformities with submissions and associated documentation.
The incumbent prepares biological specimens for transport to other laboratories or receives biological specimens by mail. Communicates with stakeholders regarding specimen transfer of custody and availability of reports is required. Ensures the integrity of the equipment and instruments by servicing, calibrating and performing quality control checks. Incumbent may perform limited toxicological examinations on forensic postmortem cases, driving-under-the influence (DUI) cases and drug-facilitate-sexual-assault (DFSA) cases.
Qualifications And Education
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in toxicology or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.
Speciaized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.
