Recently, we have added a new playground-based park, and the beautiful Pecan Orchard Venue, an open space set amidst a charming grove of pecan trees, offering a picturesque setting for community events and outdoor gatherings.
Our Parks Department is also a vital part of the city’s event planning, playing a key role in the set up and decoration of the town square, Pecan Orchard or Parkway Park for community events, festivals, and celebrations. We are seeking a Parks Superintendent to help us manage and expand our park system, maintaining the high standards of care that our residents expect while preparing for future growth.
Job Description
As the Parks Superintendent, you will lead the day-to-day operations of Alvarado’s growing park system, overseeing the maintenance and management of Lake Alvarado, our parks, trails, playgrounds, rights of way and public spaces. You will ensure that our parks are beautiful, safe, and ready for the community to enjoy. With a focus on both current needs and future growth, this role will also contribute to the city’s long-term vision for parks development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise park operations: Oversee the maintenance of parks, including the Parkway Park, Carver Park, Moore Park, and Pecan Orchard Venue, ensuring all spaces are clean, well-kept, and inviting for public use.
- Community event support: Collaborate with city officials and event planners to manage the setup and decoration of the town square and other spaces for citywide events.
- Lead a team: Supervise, coordinate and when necessary, assist the work of parks maintenance staff, and seasonal workers to maintain high standards across the city’s parks.
- Collaborate with advisory board: Oversee and strengthen the Park’s Advisory Board to promote volunteer participation in City events.
- Landscape management: Oversee landscaping efforts, including lawn care, tree management, and irrigation systems.
- Facility and equipment maintenance: Ensure all park facilities, playground equipment, and maintenance tools are in good working order.
- Project management: Assist with planning and executing future park improvements and additions as the city grows.
- Budget and resource management: Help manage the department’s operational budget and allocate resources effectively to maintain and improve the city’s parks.
- Ensure safety standards: Maintain a strong focus on the safety and accessibility of all park areas and facilities.
Qualifications:
- Experience: 3-5 years of experience in parks operations, landscaping, grounds maintenance, golf course management, or a related field.
- Leadership skills: Proven ability to manage teams and lead projects in a fast-growing environment.
- Event coordination: Experience working with event planning and logistics, especially in relation to park spaces or public gatherings.
- Strong knowledge of grounds-keeping: Expertise in turf management, plant care, and irrigation systems.
- Project management skills: Ability to plan, execute, and manage large-scale projects and park enhancements.
- Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to work effectively with city officials, vendors, and the public.
