Responsibilities
The Civilian Public Information Officer will serve as a communications and public relations expert for the Phoenix Fire Department, assisting the Deputy Communications Director with media relations, crisis communication, community outreach, and public education. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Media Relations: Write and distribute press releases, respond to media inquiries, and maintain relationships with local and national outlets.
- Crisis Communication: Assist in delivering accurate updates during emergencies and collaborate with stakeholders for unified messaging.
- Community Outreach: Plan safety campaigns, events, and programs to engage with residents, schools, and local organizations.
- Social media & Digital Communication: Manage the department's social media accounts and website, ensuring regular updates and prompt responses to public concerns.
- Event Planning: Organize public events, including safety fairs and press conferences, ensuring effective communication materials.
- Public Education: Develop and distribute materials promoting fire safety and prevention and assist with workshops and presentations.
- Internal Communication: Support fire department personnel with internal updates and reporting.
This position may require flexible hours and occasional travel for media engagements or events.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Ability to handle high-stress situations and communicate under pressure, especially during fire or disaster response.
- Ability to represent the Phoenix Fire Department professionally and ethically, maintaining the department's reputation and fostering trust with the public.
SALARY
Pay Range: $71,240 to $110,510 annually.
Hiring Range: $71,240 to $95,451 annually.

Minimum Qualifications
- Four years of responsible experience in journalism, mass media communications, or public relations.
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass media communications, public relations, advertising, marketing or a related field.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Experience writing on behalf of an organization, including but not limited to: press releases, media inquiries, or talking points.
- Experience managing public communication through sensitive or challenging situations.
- Experience managing social media platforms and creating content on behalf of an organization.
- Experience working in a government or nonprofit environment.
- Experience with community outreach and creating messaging campaigns.
