High school diploma or GED and two years increasingly responsible secretarial experience including experience as a legal secretary; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Good knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar; bilingual skills preferred. Good knowledge of office procedures, methods and practices; of principles and practices of effective customer service. Working skill in the operation of word processing equipment and other automated office systems; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers; ability to operate standard office equipment, good oral/written communications. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice’s “Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy” and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.Responsibilities include organizing and processing all legal paperwork in a high-volume office mandated by the Code of Virginia and the courts/judges of Chesterfield. Functions include answering incoming calls; assisting the public; typing legal correspondences, letters, memos, court orders, etc.; data entry, creating criminal case files, filing of criminal records, copying, run background checks on VCIN (will be trained and certified by Virginia State Police), providing back-up for all legal secretaries as needed. Perform other work as required.
