Under the direction of the Deputy County Manager, the purpose of the position is to plan, organize, guide, and coordinate the County’s sustainability initiatives within the organization and throughout the County. Employee in this classification functions in a senior executive capacity, and is responsible for ensuring adherence to, and compliance with, all applicable County, State, and Federal code and regulatory requirements applicable to the work.

- Lead the planning and implementation of County sustainability initiatives and programs.
- Conduct policy analysis, development, and advocacy.
- Develop and implement sustainability measuring and monitoring systems.
- Coordinate with County departments in managing, measuring, and monitoring sustainability initiatives and programs. Facilitate collaboration of an interdepartmental sustainability working group.
- Administer the County sustainability office, staff, and budget.
- Identify funding sources, such as grants, for sustainability studies, projects, and programs.
- Promote sustainability with County employees and as a part of the County’s culture.
- Advise and respond to elected officials about sustainability issues.
- Communicate sustainability goals and progress to the public.
- Serve as an outreach coordinator to build strong relationships with partner organizations.
- Engage with local, State, and Federal governments and agencies on sustainability issues and programs.
- Engage with community groups (e.g., neighborhood organizations and environmental advocates).
- Promote the County’s sustainability movement locally, statewide, and nationally to gain recognition.
- Maintain records and prepare annual reports.
- Perform duties as assigned/necessary that are related or logical in assignment to the position.
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Community Development, Public Administration, Business Administration, Environmental Science, Sustainable Business, or related field required.
Experience: Six (6) years of professional experience in the field of urban sustainability in government, business, consulting, nonprofit, and/or academic sectors, including two (2) years of supervisory experience. Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A Master's Degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.
Miscellaneous: Must possess and Maintain a valid Florida Driver's License
- Knowledge of current models, programs, and policies for urban sustainability.
- Knowledge of climate change science, principles of energy and environmental management, social behavior change, and economic development.
- Knowledge of public administration and public policy development, including government financing mechanisms and intergovernmental relations.
- Ability to direct/support systems analysis, strategic planning processes, and organization development processes.
- Ability to effectively analyze and develop programs, policies, and initiatives.
- Ability to manage projects, administer programs, and supervise staff, and to coordinate programs with other administrative offices.
- Ability to develop positive relations with other departments and agencies and to facilitate collaborative planning processes.
- Ability to develop performance measurement systems and initiate continuous improvement processes.
- Skill in leadership, decision making, coordinating resources and services, and negotiating and interpreting contracts.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other departments and to interact with all levels of employees, elected and appointed officials, staff, and the general public.
- Ability to present and promote sustainability programs to the public through various means of marketing and promotional activities.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in decision making and all phases of responsibilities.
- Ability to read, update, and maintain various records and files.
- Ability to access, operat,e and maintain various software applications.
