Position Information
Depending on the trade, an apprentice works in a 3 to 5 year established apprenticeship program that provides the opportunity to learn a skilled trade and become a journey level worker through on-the-job training and community college classes. Under agreement signed by the apprentice and the City, the City agrees to provide on-the-job training and the apprentice agrees to work and attend classes to learn the trade.
On the job, the apprentice receives orientation on basic work operations and work rules, receives training in the work processes of the trade, accompanies journey level workers and supervisors on the job and performs progressively more difficult, responsible and skilled assignments.
The apprentice also takes courses related to the trade at the community college. The classes are held after work hours and apprentices are required to attend on their own time. The apprentice pays for the tuition, fees and books, and upon successful completion of the semester, is reimbursed by the City.
If you are hired as a trades apprentice and have previous training and experience, you may submit this to the Joint Apprenticeship Committee, for possible credit and advancement to a higher apprenticeship level.
