Working Hours: Incumbent must be available to work up to 18 hours per week. Work schedule consists of working days and evenings, weekend hours and holidays as needed.

The City of San Marino is seeking a Part-Time Librarian Assistant for the Crowell Public Library. The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about providing exceptional customer service, demonstrates a positive and enthusiastic attitude, and enjoys participating with a high energy team.

GENERAL PURPOSE
The part-time Library Assistant position provides basic information to patrons and general customer service; performs a variety of technical and clerical library support functions including circulation and collection maintenance.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under supervision of a Librarian II or the Circulation Supervisor this single class position performs routine para-professional tasks in the children’s adult or circulation service departments, or in technical processing department.
This position is "At-Will," which means the Library Assistant serves at the will of the City Manager and may be removed at any time without cause, notice, or right of appeal.

Duties
- Answer routine directional and informational questions in person and by telephone;
- Assist patrons in locating and selecting books and materials; answer reference questions;
- Assist in the selection of books and materials; assist in planning programs for all ages; and in preparation of displays; perform basic cataloging, classification, and bibliographic data entry;
- Assist with Internet training and access;
- Assists with library programs, including book discussion groups, story hours, class visits and general adult programs. Prepares displays and assists with program promotions;
- May provide direction over the work of subordinates in routine and clerical matters;
- Provides administrative backup for professional and paraprofessional service;
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of
- Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and basic mathematics; familiarity with standard office and library equipment;
- Principles and practices of basic Library Information Science;
- Basic library terminology and mathematical principles.

Education And Experience
Education
- High School graduate (or substitute of G.E.D. or California Proficiency Certificate) with some college.
Licenses/Certificates
- Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license with a good driving record, or the ability to get from point to point for training and meetings.

Employee is regularly required to sit at a desk and in meetings for long periods of time; talk or listen, in person, in meetings and by telephone; use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Lift up to 25 pounds, intermittently, twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; walk to observe department activities; bend and squat to perform file searches; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; operate an automobile to attend various meetings and workshops. While performing duties, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; interact with, employees and the public. While performing duties, the employee is regularly required to lift and carry library materials and equipment; walk up and down.
Work Environment
Employee generally works 100% indoors. While performing the duties of this job indoors, the work environment is generally in a temperature-controlled office. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones, office equipment and/or members of the public and emergency vehicle sirens.

Retirement
Employees are enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) of the State of California. The City pays 3.75% and the employee pays 3.75% of contributions. Employees are required to participate in the Medicare program and contribute 1.45% of their salary to the program.The City does not participate in Social Security.
