THE POSITION
This Building Safety Inspector position is assigned to the Planning & Development Department - Building Safety Division.
This position is responsible for enforcement of codes and ordinances applicable to building construction, alteration and land/use zoning. Assures compliance with applicable building codes, and applicable provisions of all state and local ordinances and regulations. Identifies and enforces a variety of codes, ordinances, and standards for conformance with approved construction plans and specifications and assures deficiencies are promptly corrected. Ensures that the quality of building materials and methods used in construction or alteration are in conformance with applicable codes and that the work is done safely. Provides helpful information to builders regarding state and local construction requirements as well as land use/zoning requirements. Checks building sites to ensure proper building permits have been obtained and takes appropriate action to correct violations. Issues code violations, confers with their supervisor, and prepares case records for presentation to the City Attorney’s office when prosecution becomes necessary. Makes and keeps accurate logs and records regarding building inspections, violation notices, investigations and other related data. Recommends issuance of certificates of occupancy. Anticipates construction problems and consistently takes steps to minimize the amount of corrective work that needs to be done by the applicant or contractor. Reads, understands and interprets building plans. Maintains accurate documentation of construction errors, omissions, and violations which are up-to-date, legible, complete, and descriptive of problems encountered and resolution thereof. May perform plan check for submitted plans. Reviews plan specifications, calculations, issues corrections if necessary. Performs other related duties.
Minimum Requirements : Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: Graduation from high school or equivalent and four years of journey level experience in the building trades or as a building contractor performing a wide variety of work in the building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical fields.
License and Certificates: Valid driver's license is required at time of appointment (hire). International Conference of
Building Officials' Certificate as a combination inspector is desirable.
Applicants must receive a passing score on all examination components in order to be placed on the eligible list.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURES
COMPONENTS
Written Test (weighed at (40%): To measure inspection knowledge (on all disciplines) and ability to read, review, and interpret building plans, specifications and codes. Tentatively scheduled for week of April 14, 2025.
Appraisal Interview (weighed at 60%): To evaluate training, experience and personal qualifications. Tentatively scheduled for week of April 28, 2025.
