The City of Moreno Valley is searching for our next best hire who is paw-sitive and paw-ssionate towards animals!
A 2% base salary increase is scheduled to become effective with the first full pay period that begins after July 1, 2025 .
The Animal Care Technician position is approved for FY25/26 & may start after July 1, 2025.
Recruitment may be used to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

THE POSITION
The Animal Care Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being and care of animals housed at the shelter. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the feeding, treatment, and daily care of animals, including those that are sick, injured, or unruly. Technicians perform intake assessments, maintain accurate records, and assist in the adoption and recovery process by providing exceptional customer service. Additionally, the Animal Care Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment for both animals and staff, ensuring compliance with city policies and procedures. In cases where humane euthanasia is required, this position carries out these procedures with professionalism and compassion.

The ideal candidate for the Animal Care Technician role is a compassionate, detail-oriented professional with a deep understanding of animal care and behavior. They are skilled in safely handling animals of all sizes and temperaments, demonstrating patience and confidence in challenging situations. Strong communication and customer service abilities are essential, as this role interacts with the public regularly, assisting with lost or adoptable animals and providing guidance on proper animal care. The ideal candidate also possesses a keen ability to diagnose common animal diseases and administer appropriate treatments and vaccinations. Experience working in an animal care environment, familiarity with shelter procedures, and proficiency in maintaining accurate records are highly valued. Above all, this individual is dedicated to the humane treatment of animals and committed to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming shelter environment.
Minimum Qualifications
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, and one year of work experience that included working with animals; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Ability to pass a breed identification and symptoms of disease test within one year of employment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Animal Care Technicians clean and maintain animal holding areas at the shelter facility to provide a clean and safe environment for impounded animals, staff and the public. Incumbents perform intake activities including inputting animal data into the department records system, performing vaccinations, conducting preliminary health examinations and animal assessments. Incumbents also interact with the public during out-processing of adopted or recovered animals. Work requires contact with sick, injured, unruly and/or vicious animals and euthanizing animals in accordance with law and City policy and procedure.
Animal Care Technician is distinguished from Lead Animal Care Technician in that incumbents in the latter class provide lead work direction in addition to performing animal care duties.
