MAINTENANCE LABORER
Job Summary:
Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, the Maintenance Laborer performs general maintenance, repairs, and installations at City properties and facilities.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
This information is intended to be descriptive of the principal duties and responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.
1. Maintain grounds at city buildings and parks by picking up debris, trimming trees, mowing grass, weeding, changing trash bags in trash cans, landscaping grounds, repairing playground equipment and picnic tables, and cleaning restrooms.
2. Help control vegetation and growth; prepare, apply and properly dispose of pesticides.
3. Maintain facilities by performing minor carpentry work, painting, replacing light bulbs, making plumbing repairs and other duties as assigned.
4. Participate in the maintenance and repair of water and wastewater main lines and facilities.
5. Investigate and inspect water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
6. Install, maintain, repair, replace, excavate, backfill and locate water and wastewater infrastructure.
7. Provide traffic control at work sites to ensure a safe working environment. Place and gather cones, flags, set-out traffic signs, etc.
8. Flush water lines and fire hydrants.
9. Connect and disconnect water and sewer services.
10. Install, repair, replace and take readings for water meters and radios.
11. Locate leaks in water and wastewater lines.
12. Respond to complaints regarding low water pressure.
13. Respond to emergency service calls as required; required on-call weekend rotation as assigned. The employee may be required to work overtime or comp time with little, or no notice at any hour or day of the year, as needed.
14. Complete paperwork, forms and work orders for assigned jobs.
15. Assist in the basic operation, inspection, and maintenance of a variety of vehicles, tools and light and heavy equipment.
16. Assist in the set-up, operation, and maintenance of a variety of safety-related equipment according to the City's safety procedures and SOP.
17. Perform labor intensive work and other related duties as assigned.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Duties are generally performed citywide in both outdoor and indoor settings. This is medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move, lift and push objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing and pulling. This position is subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
Education, Certification and Experience Required:
• Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a valid Texas Class C driver’s license.
• Preferred one to three years experience.

• Ability to work an irregular work schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.
• Must exhibit attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.
• Must be able to communicate and present oneself in a professional manner.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employees and officials, and the general public.
• Ability to take and follow oral instructions and directions.
• Ability to read and understand written instructions and product directions.
• Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and the pressure of a fast-paced work environment.
• Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned vehicle, equipment, power and hand tools.
• Knowledge of safe handling techniques of hazardous chemicals and materials.
• Ability to follow City policies and procedures.
• Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
• Mower, tractor, weed eater, chain saw, leaf blower, truck, hedge trimmer, hand tools, power tools and shovels.
