The Tax Administration Division of the Finance Department is looking for a qualified individual for the position of Financial Regulatory Specialist B23 (Collector). The position will work together with a team of collectors that equitably and efficiently enforce the County’s delinquent tax collection efforts.
About this role:
Watch yourself succeed as you complete tasks and reach goals of collecting delinquent tax bills while generating revenue for the County Tax Department. You will be working independently performing enforcement actions while providing excellent customer service and solving complex tax questions.
Minimum requirements: High school diploma or G.E.D. and 2 years of customer service experience, which includes tax or collections experience.
Preferences: The successful candidate will have job experience and knowledge in:
- Local government tax and collections of delinquent accounts.
- Experience working in personal property, real estate, and business tax-related fields is required.
- Handling incoming and outgoing calls and emails from taxpayers inquiring about their accounts.
- Conducting research and skip-tracing using various online programs to investigate entities and individuals.
- Math aptitude to understand or analyze accounts and perform basic calculations – sums, prorating, and percentages, and to be able to explain billing accounts to taxpayers.
- Bilingual, English/Spanish.
The ideal candidate will have experience in local government tax collection, including delinquent accounts, personal property, real estate, and business taxes. They should possess strong research and skip-tracing skills using online tools and demonstrate a solid understanding of Virginia State and local tax laws and ordinances. The role requires experience managing a high volume of incoming and outgoing calls and emails from taxpayers, with the ability to explain billing accounts clearly and professionally. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, excellent customer service, and interpersonal abilities are essential for effective interactions with team members and taxpayers. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred. The candidate must thrive in a fast-paced, task-driven environment while maintaining accuracy and efficiency.
Special Requirements: Must pass a Criminal Background Check upon employment, and during employment, every two years thereafter, as is required by the state, and federal laws, and as found within contracts executed with the County for local tax collection.
Work Schedule:
This position is scheduled to work Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 5:00. Hours may vary and be longer due to the tax season. The selected candidate will work out of the Prince William County Building located at 5 County Complex Ct., Woodbridge, VA 22192, or telework from the employee’s home as scheduled by management. This position is a part-time teleworking eligible role that may revert to in-office scheduling if business needs change.
Starting Salary Range: $25.44- $36.98/hour
