The Office of Emergency Management is looking for a current student or recent grad to join us this summer in our internship program. You'll be joining a team of qualified professionals, who are genuinely interested in helping you grow by providing opportunities to support preparedness and safety in the City of Auburn.
Under the supervision of the Emergency Manager and in coordination with the Emergency Management Coordinator, the person in this position will provide support to the City of Auburn Office of Emergency Management. This position will perform a variety of tasks in the development, implementation, and delivery of emergency management services such as community outreach, public education, plan updates, volunteer organization support, exercise development, and emergency operations activities.
Work is conducted in accordance with federal, state, and local statutes, professional, administrative, and legal standards, and general policies as established by the Emergency Manager. Work will take place in person at the Emergency Management office or another city-approved workspace.
This is a non-benefited position. Due to the nature of Emergency Management work, this position may work evenings, weekends, and non-traditional hours. The position is open until filled with an anticipated start date of June 15. The anticipated end of the term is August 21, 2026.

- Assist the Emergency Management office with all aspects of the emergency management, safety, and related programs.
- Participate in Emergency Operations Center response during emergency activations.
- Conduct public outreach in a variety of settings and in multiple formats.
- Assist with disaster exercises and drills.
- Updating of emergency procedures and safety documents.
- Assist with updating databases and tracking documents such as the emergency management alert and notification databases, emergency worker databases, and other tracking documents.
- Complete basic administrative tasks pertaining to the department’s administrative needs.
- Assist with departmental, program, or City-wide meetings or events.
- Provide excellent customer service via phone, email, or in-person interactions with both internal and external customers.
To be eligible for this position, you must be:
- Pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree in emergency management, homeland security, public administration, urban planning safety, security, or a related field; or have obtained one in the last 12 months. Candidates without a directly related degree may qualify if they demonstrate relevant training, certifications, or practical experience in emergency management or safety.
- A self-starter who is ready to learn and operate under uncertainty.
- Strong reading and writing skills.
- Ability to do research.
- Good organizational skills.
- Ability to use Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
Note: Preference will be given to candidates that are available to work up to 40 hours per week throughout the program.We are asking for a commitment through our 10-week program, from June 15th - August 21st. Our core business hours are Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm, with an hour for lunch. We are physically in the office every day, and you will have an assigned desk with a city issued computer! This position is not eligible for remote work, so you must be able to commit to being onsite to be considered for this role.
The pay rates for this position will be offered as follows:Freshman & Sophomores: Step 1 - $20.00
Juniors & Seniors: Step 2 - $21.58
Postgraduates: Step 3 - $23.15
