Building Inspector I
This entry-level position works under the direction of higher-level Building Inspectors and the Building Inspection Leadership team. This position requires knowledge of building, trades, laws, practices & procedures to perform inspections of new construction sites, alterations & additions to existing industrial, commercial & residential owned buildings & ensure changes in occupancy of existing structures are safe & in compliance with state building codes, and to report any violations deemed necessary by working under the direction & alongside higher-level Building Inspectors.
Building Inspector II
This mid-level position works under the direction and alongside the higher-level Building Inspectors and the Building Inspection Leadership team. Trains lower-level building inspectors as assigned. This position requires considerable knowledge of building trades, laws, practices, and procedures, and computer software in order to independently perform a full range of complex, multi-disciplinary, technical, and specialized building inspections for compliance with established standards, codes, and ordinances.
Building Inspector III
This higher-level position requires minimal direction and is often viewed as a team leader or subject-matter expert in the field. Trains lower-level building inspectors as assigned. This position requires thorough knowledge of building trades, laws, practices & procedures & computer software to effectively inspect construction sites, provide training and technical assistance to building inspectors & mediate disputes between contractors & building inspectors to ensure compliance with all building codes.I
High School diploma or GED and four years’ journey-level experience working in the building trades; or at least one year of experience working as a building inspector and/or plans examiner enforcing building codes is required. A Colorado-licensed plumber is required or must be obtained within one year of employment. A certification within one or more areas in the disciplines of (PMG, building/structural). ICC Residential/Commercial Building Inspector certification requirement or must be able to obtain within one year of employment and a license within one or more areas of discipline (PMG, building/structural, or electrical). ICC Residential or Commercial Building Inspector certification required within one year.
Also Requires One Of The Following
- International Code Council combination Residential / Commercial Building Inspector certification and at least two (2) other International Code Council combination Residential / Commercial Inspector certifications in any of the following disciplines: Plumbing, Electrical, or Mechanical Inspector or Commercial Plans Examiner
- State of Colorado Journeyman or Master Electrician or Plumbing license and two (2) International Code Council Residential or Commercial Inspector certifications in a discipline other than the license category
- State of Colorado Journeyman or Master Electrician or Plumbing license and two (2) International Code Council combination Residential / Commercial Inspector certifications in a discipline other than the license category
- State of Colorado Master Electrician or Plumbing license and one (1) International Code Council combination Residential / Commercial Inspector certification in a discipline other than the license category and one (1) Residential Inspector certification in a discipline other than the license category
II
Requires at least two years of experience as a Building Inspector I, Plans Examiner I or equivalent.? Within 12 months of hire, the successful completion of the following FEMA incident management training courses is required: ICS-100, IS-559, and IS-700. Must obtain four of the certifications listed below from the International Code Council (ICC) within 18 months of hire, and the remaining certification within 3 years of hire.
- Residential Building Inspector (ICC Exam B1)
- Residential Mechanical Inspector (ICC Exam M1)
- Residential Plumbing Inspector (ICC Exam P1)
- Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner (ICC Exam 79)
- Commercial Building Inspector (ICC Exam B2)
- Commercial Mechanical Inspector (ICC Exam M2)
- Commercial Plumbing Inspector (ICC Exam P2)
- Commercial Energy Inspector (ICC Exam 77)
III
Requires four years of journey-level experience working in one or more building trades and at least four years of experience working as a Building Inspector I or Plans Examiner I or two years of experience as a Building Inspector II or Plans Examiner II.
- International Code Council combination Residential / Commercial Building Inspector certification and at least two (2) other International Code Council combination Residential / Commercial Inspector certifications in any of the following disciplines: Plumbing, Electrical, or Mechanical Inspector or Commercial Plans Examiner
- State of Colorado Journeyman or Master Electrician or Plumbing license and two (2) International Code Council Residential or Commercial Inspector certifications in a discipline other than the license category
- State of Colorado Journeyman or Master Electrician or Plumbing license and two (2) International Code Council combination Residential / Commercial Inspector certifications in a discipline other than the license category
- State of Colorado Master Electrician or Plumbing license and one (1) International Code Council combination Residential / Commercial Inspector certification in a discipline other than the license category and one (1) Residential Inspector certification in a discipline other than the license category
An equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
