Job Summary:
Under general supervision, supervises assigned recreation leaders, assistants, and other part-time staff, monitors facility usage, and is responsible for the opening and closing of facilities; coordinates recreation classes and group activities, conducts large recreation center programs, schedules staff and performs related duties as required.

- Arranges and supervises group and individual instruction in a variety of recreational classes and activities.
- Oversees recreation related programming and coordinates the scheduling of classes.
- Trains, assigns, and oversees staff and volunteers in various duties, counsels and disciplines as necessary.
- Assists in the creation and the distribution of publicity materials (flyers, invitations, announcements, marquee, etc.).
- Creates and maintains a monthly calendar of site activity.
- Attends staff meetings and training sessions as requested.
- Ensures that all attendance reports are completed and submitted to Supervisor.
- Ensures that all recreation site equipment and supplies are adequate and in good condition and makes recommendations for replacement when necessary.
- Acts as Supervisor upon the Supervisor's request in his/her absence.
- Assists with the set-up/tear down duties as needed.
- Assists with site budget preparation, and budget monitoring.
- Assists with front office operations and park reservations as requested. May perform other duties in support of the Community Services Department as assigned including but not limited to city-wide events, day care, youth and adult sports, teen programs, recreation classes, aquatics, facility management, senior citizen programs, adaptive recreation and other related services.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Principles and objectives of recreation programs pertaining to scope of work such as; games, arts, crafts, and athletic events, sports rules and regulations; coaching techniques; psychology of children and youth; principles of supervision and training.
Skills
Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook are preferred but not required.
Ability To
Maintain discipline; to follow oral and written directions; to present written and oral reports; to work effectively with youth, supervisors and the public.
Education And Experience Guidelines
Qualifying for consideration in the selection process will be based on the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities described above, along with any combination of education and experience outlined below.
Education
High School Diploma or GED equivalent is preferred but not required.
Experience
Two (2) years of college training in Recreation, Education, Physical Education or a related field;
OR
Two (2) years of paid experience in recreation leadership including work as a Recreation Leader or equivalent is required.
Licenses/Certificates
A valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is required.
Possession of an American Red Cross or any other Community Services Department approved accredited certification in First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer is preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Positions in this category require moderate physical exertion associated with the ability to lift, carry, push, pull or climb, which involve the safeguarding of individuals, public and property.
- This position also requires extensive and repetitive physical activity involving the arms, wrists, and hands, including writing and using a keyboard. It also requires physical abilities associated with the ability to read, write and communicate in a work environment requiring no extraordinary physical strength or other special physical qualifications.

Employee Benefits – Part-time
PAID SICK LEAVE - After 30 days of employment, will accrue one (1) hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a minimum of 3 days or 24 hours of paid sick leave to be provided in a 12-month period.
MEDICARE – The City of West Covina is part of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) agency and does not make any contributions towards social security. However, the City does contribute 1.45% of gross salary towards Medicare.
PART-TIME, SEASONAL & TEMPORARY EMPLOYEES DEFERRED COMPENSATION (Retirement Plan)
The City withholds 7.5% of gross salary per pay period on a tax-deferred basis that can be used at separation or towards retirement.
