The Code Enforcement Division plays a vital role in protecting the health, safety, and quality of life of Virginia Beach residents. As a Code Enforcement Supervisor, you will lead a team of skilled Housing Code Inspectors who ensure that existing structures, properties, and neighborhoods meet local and state building and property maintenance standards.

What You’ll Do
- Oversee and support a team of Housing Code Inspectors by:
- Prioritizing and assigning inspections and daily workload
- Conducting performance evaluations and ensuring ongoing training and certification
- Making recommendations related to hiring, discipline, and staffing needs
- Ensure the effective enforcement of codes by:
- Supervising field investigations and inspections in an assigned area of the City
- Reviewing enforcement actions to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance
- Helping resolve complex or high‑profile code violation cases
- Providing expert guidance on compliance strategies for difficult or sensitive cases
- Engage with the community by:
- Responding to challenging public inquiries and explaining code requirements
- Meeting with civic leagues, realtors, business groups, and community members to share information and address concerns
- Serving as a liaison to other City departments and agencies
- Support City operations by:
- Preparing or participating in cases requiring civil or criminal prosecution
- Applying mediation and conflict‑resolution skills to help resolve disputes
- Administering City contracts for services such as vehicle abatement, graffiti removal, and grass and weed removal
- Driving a City vehicle to perform field-related tasks

Required Certifications to Be Considered
Applicants must provide proof of:
- Completion of state‑mandated Core and Property Maintenance Training Modules
- Certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector
- Completion of Residential Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing Modules
- Certification as a Residential Mechanical Inspector
