GENERAL PURPOSE:The purpose of the Coconut Creek Internship Program is to strengthen relationships between educators and the City of Coconut Creek while assisting students in applying classroom theory in a work environment. The Intern can expect to be assigned duties and responsibilities that are comparable to those performed by full-time, entry level Recreation Programmer employees. Interns will be able to visit and work within all areas of service that the department offers.
Work is performed under close supervision of the Supervisor and Senior Programmer.
SCHEDULE:Must be available to work morning/afternoon/evenings (Monday -Friday), Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and special events. Days/hours are subject to change. Major scheduling emphasis will be placed in the area that most closely parallels the professional goals of the student. Pay Rate: $15.00/hour Copy of current transcript MUST be included with application in order to verify class standing.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Interns will be exposed to the following areas: recreation & athletic league programming, theater programming, senior center programming, special needs programming, administration, facility maintenance, special events, park ranging & fitness. Depending on the time of the year, Interns will assist with an afterschool program, summer camp and large scale special events
. - Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing programs and specialized recreation activities for a variety of ages, including athletic leagues, theater programs, tournaments, fitness programs, after school programs, clinics, and summer day camp
- Interacts and communicates with a variety of groups and individuals including department and City staff, community groups, volunteers, senior citizens, special needs participants and the general public
- Creates press releases, displays & brochures for programs and facilities
- Provides guidance on registration procedures events, and activities
- Provides assistance in setting up recreation classes, leagues, meetings and events
- Handles specific assignment/job task for each City-wide special event
- Ensures the safety of all program, activity and event participants and providers by following City policies and procedures and monitoring participants' activity
- Monitors recreation facilities to ensure security, proper working order of equipment, cleanliness of area and other potential maintenance hazards
- Provides assistance with preparing fields, enforcing park rules and monitoring field and shelter permits
- Receives reviews, prepares and/or submits records and reports that are programmatic and administrative (for example: activity reports, program proposals and evaluations, registration forms, deposit logs, news releases)
- Eligible to work in the United States
- Enrolled as a degree-seeking student by an accredited local college or technical school carrying at least a half-time academic course load
- Must have a valid Florida driver's license
- Must have current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and AED certifications (or be able to obtain them before first day of employment)
- Must maintain an active status as student throughout internship
- Must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5
- Must be in good academic standing

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 80 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station and extended periods of time standing and/or walking.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature, and noise extremes, machinery and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence and/or disease, or pathogenic substances.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors.
