EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Under supervision, operates, controls and navigates a fire boat to and from scenes of fires or other emergencies; directs crew in deck duties pertaining to safe handling and mooring of fire boat; maneuvers fire boat about danger area as required for most effective firefighting techniques and for safety of crew; directs operation of fire boat when towing vessels; operates steering gear, engine controls, and communication devices when boat is underway or when pumping; trains and supervises crew in operation and maintenance of fire boat; observes Federal and other (examples of duties continued) regulations pertaining to operation of vessels in the Long Beach Harbor, offshore and inland waters; maintains harbor charts by noting new aids or hazards to navigation from instructions of the U.S. Hydrographic Office; maintains logs and records, including compass courses, speeds, and times of runs; inspects equipment on fire boat and enters findings in ship log; makes certain that all tanks, including fuel, oil, foam, fresh water, and others are properly drained and filled; participates in inspections of installations and occupancies for firefighting and fire prevention purposes; acts as Company Commander in his absence; assists in the service training of fire personnel in the pumping and boat handling procedures of fire boats; and performs other related duties as required.
Requirements To File
Open to current, classified Firefighters in the Long Beach Fire Department with at least four years combined service as a Firefighter and Fire Recruit, as of close of filing. Qualifying experience will be calculated in accordance with Section 102 of the Civil Service Rules and Regulations.
Completion of LBFD's "Fire Boat Operator's Exam Candidate Certification" procedure must be submitted by 11:59 p.m., March 11, 2009 (proof required)* . In addition, a valid (Motor Boat) Operator's License-100 Ton issued by the U.S. Coast Guard will be required within the first year of appointment.
*Applications will not be processed until all required proofs are received. Any required proofs, such as certificates, diplomas, licenses, or transcripts, must be received in the Civil Service Dept. by 11:59 p.m., March 11, 2009.
SELECTION PROCEDURE

EXAMINATION WEIGHTS: Occupational Written Examination 35% Performance Examination 50% Assessment of Promotability 15% A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in each part of the examination. A candidate orientation is tentatively scheduled for February 25, 2009 at the Long Beach Fire Department Training Center, 2249 Argonne Avenue, Long Beach. Attendance at the orientation session is voluntary; however, all candidates are encouraged to attend. General information on the examination will be distributed and candidates will be given an opportunity to ask questions. The session will last approximately one hour. Materials will be mailed to candidates who do not attend the orientation session. WRITTEN EXAMINATION All candidates meeting the requirements will be invited to the written examination. The written test is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at the Long Beach Gas and Oil Department, 2400 E. Spring Street, Long Beach, and will be based upon the published study guide. Only those candidates who successfully pass the written examination, at a score of at least 70, will be invited to participate in the Performance Examination. PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION The PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION is tentatively scheduled for March 30 through April 3, 2009. The Performance Examination will consist of various control and navigational maneuvers and pump operations necessary for the safe, effective operation of a Fire Boat and its equipment. Only those candidates who successfully pass the performance examination, at a score of at least 70, will be considered for the Assessment of Promotability. ASSESSMENT OF PROMOTABILITY The ASSESSMENT OF PROMOTABILITY is tentatively scheduled for the week of April 13, 2009. Candidates who successfully passed the performance examination will be required to submit a completed Assessment of Promotability Packet no later than 4:30 p.m., April 10, 2009 to the Civil Service Department, 333 W. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, 7th Floor. Further details will be available with the Assessment of Promotability packet. Only those candidates who successfully pass both the written and performance examinations with scores of at least 70 will be evaluated for Assessment of Promotability. Scores will range from a minimum of 70 to a maximum of 100 points. SCORE CALCULATIONS: Passing scores on the written and performance examinations will be converted to a scale ranging from 70 to 100. The resulting score for the written and performance examinations will be multiplied by 0.35 and 0.50, respectively. The Assessment of Promotability scores will be multiplied by 0.15. Seniority Credit in accordance with Article 3, Section 14, of the Civil Service Rules and Regulations, will be added to grades of those who qualify. For examination purposes, seniority will be based upon whole months of service completed as of the last day of filing. SENIORITY CREDIT: Seniority Credit in accordance with Article III, Section 14, Civil Service Rules and Regulations, will be added to each qualifying examination score for each whole month of service completed as of the last day of filing, to obtain the final score.
