BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Duties include light-duty mechanical work such as conducting scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, simple emergency service on vehicles, making fuel runs, identifying mechanical problems, and reporting any problems found to the mechanics. This position also requires keeping CityWorks (digital) records of material used and time spent on each job. The position is also responsible for assisting mechanics when needed, ordering, stocking, picking up parts, and picking up/delivering vehicles.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Good general knowledge of auto mechanics and heavy equipment
- Good general knowledge understanding part numbers and vehicle information
- Ability to maintain parts inventory
- Ability to utilize a computer and input data
- Ability to pull trailers and back them up safely
- Ability to perform routine maintenance on vehicles
- Ability to work with a variety of hand and power tools
- Ability to diagnose potential problems and either make the necessary repairs or bring the problem to a mechanic’s attention
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers and other department personnel
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Graduate or equivalent, mechanical training, and at least one year’s experience in automotive repairs; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.
Must have the ability to obtain a Texas Class “A” or “B” CDL license with Airbrake endorsement and maintain a satisfactory driving record
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDS:
Primarily in an indoor environment with the ability to operate outdoors when needed. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold during summer and winter months.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Standard office equipment including multi-line telephone, computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, shredder, printer, etc.
Forklift, equipment for diagnostic and testing purposes, and any tools related to auto repair. Must also have the ability to load, lash, and haul trailers including backing up.
