The Police Chief will plan, direct, manage and oversee the activities and operations of the City of Conroe Police Department including law enforcement, criminal investigations, support services and administrative functions; coordinate assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies; and provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City Administrator.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a related field. Extensive law enforcement experience including five years of administrative and supervisory experience.
Special Requirements:
Possess or eligible for TCOLE peace officer certification at the Intermediate Level. Experience as a Chief in a 143-city preferred. Must pass the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge and understanding of Chapter 143 of the Texas Local Government Code.
- Skill in strong management, interpersonal interactions and conflict resolution.
- Knowledge of budgeting procedures and ability to monitor expenditures and revenues.
- Knowledge of emergency management issues and practices.
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, including ability to give effective presentations to City Council, employee groups, citizens and other groups.
- Ability to communicate and interact appropriately with people of different ethnic, economic and social backgrounds.
- Ability to manage personnel, supervise hiring, training, evaluating, promoting, disciplining and/or discharge of employees.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light and requires the ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, speaking, stooping, talking, visual acuity and walking.
